Twin set triggers on a DG rifle?

I have seen many posts on calibers for buffalo and preferred rifle actions. Assuming that the caliber & action are adequate, - Are there any benefits or disadvantages of using a 9.3X62 Mauser rifle with twin set triggers for buffalo?

I find the set triggers easy to use and it certainly helps keep my eyes on the target as the rifle goes off. The question is more about the use of the front trigger for quick shooting.

My Simson Mauser rifle has a very heavy pull when using just the front trigger and this affect accuracy for quick shooting. Is there any way to make the front trigger lighter without affecting the set trigger mechanism?

Or should I replace the original set triggers with a modern trigger?

I HATE set triggers for hunting!

I think anyoneone using them on dangerous game is asking for trouble.

Target shooting they are fine.
Hunting from a stand as they do in Europe might also be acceptable.

But, African hunting situations certainly they are not.

If your Mauser has a heavy trigger, have it adjusted, or replaced.

A light, crips trigger is all you need.

I have DST's on most of my single shot rifles. Absolutely love them. But, they are target rifles.

I think they are just fine for your rifle/caliber. I would be looking to reduce that front trigger to about 3.5lbs if I owned it.

You do have to deal with the fact that a close range charge by DG could result in your PH shooting your animal.

I have to agree with those who say a double set trigger on a bolt rifle used for any dangerous game is certainly asking to get stomped or bitten. If the rifle is used only for plains game then it is a matter of personal choice. With plains game the only thing lost, if the shooter screws up, is a lost shot opertunity. Where dangerous game is on the minue, the loss my well be consideranly more! The one place I see a real benefit a double set trigger plays on a HUNTING rifle is, in mountain sheep hunting. I have a couple of old Mauser mountain rifles with double set triggers, but I rarely use them on anything other than deer.

I don't mind a set trigger on the right barrel of a double rifle, but I rarely use it except for a long shot on an animal that isn't aware of my presences. Even on a double if it has lots of recoil and is a designated bad boy rifle, I want only single trigger for each barrel, with no set!

And Will's favorite, NO SINGLE TRIGGER FOR BOTH BARRELS! Big Grin

Thank you gentlemen. That is another bit of homework & practice that I need to do before I achieve my dream of an African buffalo hunt.

Confused What made the set trigger worthles on a two trigger 300 H&H double rifle?

The set triggers on a two trigger double rifle have two weights of trigger pull. Most are around four pounds when not set, and about 8 OZ when set. The only problem I find with them is shooter error, when he fires the barrel without the set trigger while the set trigger is set on the other barrel.

I have a 9.3X74R double with a set trigger on the right barrel, and an 8X57JR with a set trigger on the right barrel, and as long as the set triggers are un-set, they work just like any other double trigger double! Both are very accurate on the right barrel when useing the set feature. I often use the set feature for the first shot to place the shot as well as I'm capable. Works for me. Of course if you shoot the other barrel while trigger is set they will both go off!
