Rhino poaching up in SAJohannesburg - The number of rhinos being poached in South Africa was on the increase, the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) said on Friday.
"We'll have a higher number of poached rhinos than last year if it continues at the same rate," EWT CEO Yolan Friedmann told a briefing in Johannesburg.
"At the current numbers they are not facing extinction yet, but the markets and drivers [of poaching] is not likely to decrease."
A total of 330 rhino were poached on private farms and in national reserves last year. According to Friedmann the current figure was between 145 to 150 rhinos.
The country's total rhino population is 20 000 to 22 000.
"This has become part of formalised, organised crime. It's not just an environmental issue anymore," Friedmann said.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

.458AubsWe (my brothers and myself) have been working on a concept that could put into place an effective tool from cost and efficiency point of view to assist in erradicating Rhino Poaching, we are now are quater scale and hope to raise funds to complete the pilot project. i hope to be able to get this off the ground before it is too late.
this Rhino poaching and the lack of convictions leaves a bad taste
