Hi All,
I will be in Durban for a conference in mid August and figure I might as well do some fishing/hunting while there. I am really interested to know if there are unfenced opportunities for Nyala in RSA (or better yet, nearby) and if anyone has some recommendations for tigerfishing in the neighborhood?

If it's a big neighborhood i do.
90 minutes north of Durban on the coast road is Richard's Bay. Two hours north of there is Pongola Reserve/Josini Dam. Tigerfishing starts to get good in mid-august and gets better through November. Lodging/meals, et cetera along with the fishing are at $400 per day.
As for unfenced nyala, we have them "God-given" as in not bought at auction, but the property is fenced. (Fence went in during 2007) A true and honest chance at something 30+.
One way or the other, let me know if you need anymore info.

That 99% of hunts in South Africa ARE behind fences.

You wont easily find any unfenced Nyala populations that are legally huntable due to the protected status of the Nyala.
However, If you come to Hluhluwe and see what the bushveld looks like here you would realise that a Nyala could elude you in 100 square meters of bushveld let alone 1000ha, so you are going to have a good hunt on your hands.
The only truly free range hunting that I can offer you in Natal are for animals like Reedbuck (common and Mountain), Eland (in the Drakensberg), Bushbuck (in the Umkomaas Valley) and Bushpig ( in the cane belt). These hunts are all within 2 hours of Durban and we can arrange the pickups etc to get you into teh area.

MCA manVlam is sooo right about Nyala! Two of us were chasing after Nyala in the Bushveld near Ellisras in 2007, and both of us got their trophy, but not without dealing with the thorns and crawling thru the brush. Took mine at 20 yards in heavy underbrush, Rob's shot was maybe 30 yards. Nyala are elusive and wonderful trophies!

Mike SmithZululand is in my opinion the best place to hunt them in RSA. I dont have my list of outfitters with me to give you a short list of names. I am sure the outfitters and agents here can give you a list. Not only will you want the names of the compnies and phs but also of the properties being offered as well. Until you get a list like that it is difficult to make an informed choice. There is also a free ranging population in both Namibia and I believe Mozambique. I am not a hundred percent sure about the Moz population. I know there are some nice ones in Namibia but the trophy fees are higher there than in RSA.

graybirdWhile hunting nyala, don't forget about red duiker. They inhabit the same think, riverine habitat. I kick myself in the ass everytime I think about the record book male I passed on Wednesday afternoon, saying to myself I wasn't going to shoot one until Thursday. Only saw females the rest of the safari!!!
I hunted near Hluhluwe as well.

Use Enough GunAnd Livingstone's Suni. I have to laugh at all of the authoritative comments on fenced hunting. Try some of this in the thick jungle-like bush of Kwa-Zulu-Natal with your bolt action rifle and then report back to us, after your hunt, on the "fenced" hunting, and shopping.

Judging by the bush behind you in the photo you know exactly what I am talking about. Most people think of bush as the dry Savannah acacias, the coastal bush, truly is bush and makes for some of the most challenging but ultimately the most rewarding hunting.
Its a whole different ball game when you are using stealth as well as your ability to pick up the faintest sound and movement in the undergrowth. No bumbling through the bush and shooting at 200m, this is up close and personal and so much fun.
