Not hunting, obviously, but a grim reminder of how powerful these beasts are, and as you all know, the African cousins can and do get much, much bigger than this Indian ele gone berserk.

Warning: very graphic footage.

Impressively, the strength of an elephant has no limits. But nobody had a gun to kill the animal? Incredible and that in theory the elephant was tamed. You can never trust a wild animal. Not content with killing a person attacks the other elephants. Why this behavior? Confused

Regards,

Oscar.

Just curious, do zoos and animal parks etc keep a rifle for situations like this? If so, does someone know how to use it?

The real question is, does the decorative head plate effect one's shot placement.

Was that a police officer with hat and stick in hand chunking a rock at the elephant at about 7:35 into the video? You just have to love India’s strictest gun control!

Are not guns outlawed in India?

I thought it was terribly interesting as that is pretty much how the stories go of African elephants killing someone. Stomp and squish, kneel down and squish, and then carry it around for a bit. And then stomp on them a bit more for good measure.

You forgot the kicking and tossing. And I agree, I felt like I was watching the scene that I have read about so many times.

At one point when the elephant lost track of the guy beneath him I was reminded of Selous sneaking "out the back door" on the elephant that knocked him from his horse and tried to kneel on him.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

The early stages of musth would explain the behaviour. It is pretty dangerous to be around a bull in this state and even a 'tame' animal would become very aggressive and dangerous when going through musth.

The really horrible part of the video is that the guy who got creamed was still moving after the ele left him for the last time. Hope he was not concious. The brave folks who hauled him away didn't spend much time worrying about spinal injuries either. I guess that would have been a fairly acedemic concern anyway.

I pity the elephant it should have killed a few more of those jungli Indian Bast...rds. And before someone goes off on a tanget I grew up in India, so know the local mentality. You can see that the poor animal looked malnourished and should never have been subjected to the hoards of people around them. This probably happened in South India, probably in Tamil Nadu or Kerala at some religous gathering. By the way Indian ele numbers are increasing and lots of increasing problems with them as their habitat grows smaller. Of course all hunting is banned in India, in their great wisdom of wildlife conservation!

A lot of strange things go on in India and it is a mystic place. Indians have a close relationship with many animals and consider them sacred. They worship, cows, cobras, monkeys and even rats Rat Temple in Rajasthan, but this mob mentality and subjecting animals to such craziness, really gets me going!

Anyone can see in that Video that the elephant firstly had a chain around its back leg which was put there as it probably had a history of short temper in the past. Then they put a huge ornament on its head and subject it to the endless chanting and banging of drums and shouting of millions of junglis - what can you expect.

After killing that man, it looked further tormented and seemed in great distress. Such a shame.
