At the end of next month I will be going on my first DGH in Mozambique. It is a 2 on 1 hunt with a good friend and we are both taking our wives.

I think we should both give a normal tip to the camp staff but I am unsure what to do about the PH, trackers, driver, etc, etc.

For both of us to give a normal tip seems to be making a double payment.

If you have done a 2 0n 1 hunt how have you handled it?

I've encountered this situation with my dad and my son. Your PH will have to work twice as hard on a two on one and if he does a good job, tip him well. With my dad we both chip in for a nice tip and with my son I do ten percent of both our costs. Tipping is a personal choice for each of us, just do what you think is right.

At the end of the day one tips based on their ability to do so. This can be moved in either direction by having really deep pockets or by having to struggle to do the hunt at all.

You will not have a bad hunt! The ph will be capable and will see that the wife's wine glass remains full at all times.

The best ph's I have had were worth any amount that could be scrounged up. (Wickes Groenwald, Rodie Tourle, and Wayne Bartlett come to mind)

The fact that you care enough to ask indicates that you will do fine. My advice is 3/4 to full 1 on 1 tip per hunter based on the treatment of the wives. Don't forget the wine glass!

I only do 2x1 hunts rarely, but I always tip exactly as I do for 1x1 hunts --

Some think that the PH, et al are getting a "double tip" that way -- but I think that they are also doing twice the work -- maybe more.

When you get bored with life, start hunting dangerous game with a handgun.

A 2x1 hunt is very difficult for the PH. He essentially is trying to compress the opportunities availabe on two hunts into the same time frame as one hunt. With some clients that's fine and as long as the folks get to hunt together that is more important than the bag. On the other hand when folks are doing a 2x1 to save money but still expect to have the same opportunities they would have on a 1x1 the pressure on the PH can be great.

IMO a 2x1 safari should rate at least a 1.5x tip for a 2x1.

When I go on a 2x1 hunt (which is rare), I go with the full understanding that my chances of success are reduced, my opportunity to be "picky" is reduced, my first choice to take a great trophy is reduced. I typically do it to either save money or to spend time with the other hunter, I cut my usual tip to the PH in half and expect the other hunter to pick up the balance.

Well stated on chances. And handling tip. Chances don't double just because 2 are in camp and they should reduced chances regardless of the reasons for doing it and the PH should be expected to find twice the animals of each variety.

I fundamentally disagree.

I will also state that the 2x1 hunts I have done have been much more layed back affairs. Less pressure on the PH, much easier hunting, much more of a "social event" between the participants (PH included).

Thanks to all who responded, you have helped me clear things up in my mind.

The 2 on 1 hunt was my partners idea as it will give me more chances to be in on the hunt for the big stuff. This will be his 14th. trip and he his done DG on all of them.

We have 12 hunting days and even though this is only my 2nd trip to Africa our lists are small. We both want a buff and Ken wants a tuskless cow if it can be done. Other than that I would like to hunt eland, as the PH told me we would track them like the buff, and Ken will take a kudu if a real good one is located.

This will be my hunt of a lifetime and we will have a ball. We are going for all the right reasons and I fully intend to reward all who help make it happen.

Thanks again for your input.

My "toughest" tip determination was in TAN when I had been preceeded by two well off guys and their non-hunting wives....camp staff had their expectations raised way high!

With that kind of attitude something tells me you will have a great hunt! Bueno Suerte!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
