Sarge,
Thanks! I think I will skip the dinners and spend the extra money on a few cold ones at the bar.
Thanks again.

I'm a veteran of one visit, and I didn't do any of the auctions, dinners, breakfast, etc. You meet plenty of interesting people on the floor, the nights are for a dinner and a few cold ones with friends. I'm coming again, arriving Wednesday early afternoon and staying through Saturday. Look into booking a hotel room...good things don't come to those that wait in this case!

Do they sell rifles at the convention??
I am on the market for a good .404 Jeffery. I have a budget of $2000 to spend and want something brand new.
Not sure if I can find one in that range or not, I'm considering having one built out as well.

I don't know if there is any formalised meeting plan but I will be at that bar in the evening so if anyone wants to meet over beers and shoot the shit I'm game for that.

Carmelo,

If you are building a rifle you could follow the path described by Fred and others on the Big Bore Forum, and begin with a M70 Winchester chambered for an Ultra Mag cartridge.

First stage of conversion is to rebarrel that to .404 Jeff. Successive stages can follow as "wife's tolerence" allows.

See you in Reno.

Carmelo,

They do sell rifles, although any new .404J you find there is going to be seriously above your $2K. The closest will be Winchester 's Custom Shop at $3K and change, and only if they have their plan to build them past the "announcemnent " stage. Dakota will be showing heir .404 Dakota, but that is higher still.

I also like to go to the gunmakers' show and the knifemakers' show, both of these are held in the Silver Legacy.

Frans,

I will be there for the whole show too, see you there.

C,
For $2K you ought to be able to have a good smith build you a .404, since you can do it on a standard M98 action, all rumors to the contrary discounted. The OAL is less than that of the .375 H&H. All that's needed is to open up the boltface and add larger bottom metal and a new barrel. That's about a grand, there, leaving you another thou for stock and sights. For me, a Williams or vintage Redfield peep would be the only way to go on that caliber.

Well, if we're going to meet at the Barnes booth Fri at 3:00, let's get a somewhat larger turnout than the rather pathetic four who showed up last year! Hmmmpf!

Jeff,

For the past few years we've been meeting at the Barnes booth at 3:00 PM on Friday. Lisa and I will probably make it this year.

Take Care,

-Steve

Sarge,
That is what I am considering, or building on the Montana Long action as others have done.
I could spend more but wife would kill me.

I haven't missed one for the last 3 years. Spend usually 3-4 days. During the 2003 convention I was the winner of one of the auctions. Conducted my first safari in Sept 03. Would absolutely love to attend this year as well, but this year I will need some help getting out of IRAQ!!!!!
Hopefully, this combat pay will be enough for a leopard / lion hunt in 06
Now I know how the some of the plains game feel when that round went high.
Have fun everyone!
