The most remarkable evidence of
clients’ readiness to pay big bucks
for top-of-the-line concession hunts
is what happened when Jeff Rann of
Rann Hunting Safaris (Tel. 830-426-
3476; or 011-267-686-1821. E-Mail
rannsafaris@yahoo.com) floated the
idea at the SCI Convention of offering
a 30-day, lion-only safari to
Botswana for a whopping $131,975.
That includes a daily rate of $2,500
a day, a concession fee of $10,500, a
trophy fee of $20,000 and a Resource
Utilization Fee of $10,000.
By the second day of the convention,
Rann told The Hunting Report
he was sold out through 2006!

Maybe I am missing something being new to African Hunting but what makes that hunt worth 131k?

I could a few months of Safari at that price, but I guess it was worth it to someone. I hope they get the lion of their dreams.

If the common man is completely eliminated from hunting then that hunting has no future.

If lion hunts costed that sort of money why should other hunters support its continuance just so the billionaires can continue their sport.

In the longer term greed always causes problems.

Don't panic,

There's always a few people in this world who want to be the first in or be willing to pay an ultra high price for a product......snob value has always been around. Botswana Lion prices will probably drop dramatically in a couple of years. Until then buy elsewhere like all sensible people. The highest price I heard of was at the DSC show where a similar hunt sold for US$145K.

roflmao

Does the term "Lambs to the slaughter" ring any bells? I simply don't understand why so many people are willing to pay so much money for a botswana Lion........after all there's pleny of good Lion hunting available elsewhere in Africa at a fraction of that cost.

Just a question and it has been debated on this board before but...will this type of price escalation increase the number of hunters to the RSA to shoot lions behind high fence? I am not talking about 5 acre canned hunts but larger fenced ranches selling male lions for $25,000 or so? Does what some may have scoffed at before become an alternative to putting a lion in the trophy room of the average Joe? I don't think I could do it personally but...at the current Botswana lion prices and having to be in Tanz 21 days for lion change your consideration of whats ethical to you?

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

There are very few people willing or able to pay such a price, so I stronly doubt that this represents any kind of trend for the future.

NitroX makes an excellent point! Raise the price and the consumers will go away. And in this case so will the majority of support for conservation in Africa.

I hope that sombody out there has the "wisdom" to keep it real!

500gr is most likely on track with his assessment as well. Don't think 100K plus Lion hunts are going to become the rage!

I know alot of folks that could afford the price, but would rather have a set of Purdeys for that money!

I think the type of person who shoots Lion in RSA and the type of hunter who hunts Lion in a True wilderness Area are very different......and both types will continue to do it their preferred way.

Lion hunting will never be cheap......and I'm glad of that. Not for business reasons but for ethical ones. Our least expensive (2x1) 21 day TZ hunt sells for US$20750 per hunter including everything except trophy fees and tips.A 1x1 21 day hunt costs US$35500 ..... I personally think that's a perfectly reasonable price to pay for a hunt where you can take so many DG & other animals......

So why do people pay US$145K for a Lion hunt?......beat's the hell outta me.

Since lion in Botswana has been closed for 3 years those who are paying top dollar probably believe that there are spectacular lions wandering all around the bush and they will be able to shoot the lion of all lions. If Botswana keeps lion on schedule the price will drop although it will never be low.

Absolutely insane prices and its not just one "overly zealous lion hunter", the next two seasons are booked.

My lion, although not the biggest with the most perfect mane, looks real good to me now because he is in the "salt" Big Grin

My lion hunting days are over if these prices are the trend.

Gents and Ladies,

The Botswana prices are incredible because of all the reasons others have given but when I inquired with Rann in '98 he wanted me to book 28 days and it would have cost me $48,000 before I even pulled the trigger back then. So Botswana and Rann have always been pretty expensive.

For a little more money than I would have had to pay with Rann in '98 I can offer a tracking lion hunt in RSA for '05 and '07. This area is nearly 200,000 acres that shares a common unfenced border with Kruger. Only 1 lion is shot here each year and you can only imagine the quality. Is this area as wild as Tanzania, Botswana etc.? Maybe not but you will see herds of elephant and buffalo. Lion and hyena will be visiting your tented camp at night. Is that wild enough? The area has only one full time resident plus a ranger and his staff.

Someone will say that the price I quoted is a high price for a lion but when you add up all extras to hunt lion in Tanzanaia, Zambia etc. I think it is quite competitive. This a complete package including the observer fees and the whole 9 yards.

Regards,

Mark

Mark,
Nothing personal intended and I may very well have missed it in your note here but I see no "Quote". And in your recent post about a Leopard hunt in a supposed prime area, again, no "quote". What is "a little more money"? Are you offering these on a highest bid type basis?
thx

Dungbeetle,

Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to be mysterious or deceptive. I just figured anybody interested in a real great hunt might contact me personally which several people did. The leopard hunt goes for $23,400.00 and the lion about $53,000.00. Also in the case of the lion if you don't get him in 16 days you can return within the calendar year to try again at no additional cost.

This sounds too good but beleive me it is the real deal and they will only let you shoot a big mature lion which of course will take some work.

I'm putting my own money on this in '06 and I expect nothing but a hard hunt with lots of walking.

I hope this answered your questions. If I can give you more information just e-mail me anytime.

Regards,

Mark

I just don't understand this. I did a little research and came up with this from a Zim outfitter;s website.
18 day hunt with lion on lisence at a daily rate of $1100 and a lion trophy fee of $4500. So, before TTL your looking at $24300. That's less than a quarter of the cost of the Bots hunt.
Even if you went for 30 days and shot the lion, a bull elephant, a leopard, a buffalo, a hippo, a croc, a sable it would cost less than half of the advertised Bots lion hunt.
Now, you might make up the difference in shipping and taxidermy fees, but is a Bots lion THAT great?
All i can say is, WTF?

500grains,

Exactly my thoughts. I hunted lion over bait 4 times and had some success. It was a great adventure but trying to get the drop on one by tracking sounds like a completely new experience.

Mark

Billy Bob,

A Toyota Camry costs US$25,000.

A Rolls Royce costs $200K, yet the Toyota gets better gas mileage and is more reliable.

But some guys still buy the Rolls.

Jeff is now owner of the 777 ranch in hondo , near here. It costs an arm, leg and one testicle to hunt there.
Maybe that's where he got the idea since he moved here to Texas. Where the average Joe can't hunt.
