Pretty sure he was like Stewart Granger, William Holden etc. but don't have any facts. I read while making Hatari! he and Hardy Kruger did a bunch. Would like to know more I know he was an Avid fisherman who likes Alaska and had a nice Yacht

I have read that he shot an Elephant with a Win 70 .458 while filming Hatari. There is also a picture in one of the Weathrby catalogs with him and a Kudu I believe

He was the money behind a gun company making rifles designed by Jim Sullivan of M16 fame.

Duke respectfully had to pull his money out after some accountant go cute with Duke’s money.

I had always heard the he was mostly a bird hunter and fisherman. His yacht at least for while was a converted WWII mine sweeper. An article appeared in Popular Science many years ago featuring it.

One of his favorite hideouts where he could be out of the eyes of the media was Sequim Washington on the Olympic peninsula. The Marina there is named after him.

I got news for you my friends.

There are a lot of famous people today, in all walks of lives, who are hunters and shooters.

Sadly, they like to keep it very quiet, because of the awful publicity they will get if this was made public.

Quite a number of them come here and enjoy an afternoon of shooting.

Some even have their own underground shooting ranges attached to their own houses! clap

I miss the good old days when Stewart Grainger, Robert Stack, Hemingway and others were not afraid to show their love of guns and hunting. There are a lot of actors and musicians (some surprised me) that hunt or like to shoot. Who knew that Avril Lavigne and Jennifer Lawrence liked to hunt?

I wish some were more vocal about it like Ted Nugent and not apologize for it. I think we have been silent long enough and it is not working. We need to go on the offensive

The early Weatherby catalogs show JW and Roy W with his cusdtom .300 Weatherby and also one or two hunting pics of JW in Africa--probably while filming Hatari.
While on teh subject, Google JW's Playboy interview--1970 I believe. His views on politics and Hollywood and minorities are spot on.

My childhood hero Roy Rogers(king of the cowboys) was also a hunter. There is a picture of him with a polar bear and he too was a friend of Weatherby and used the 300 weatherby mag. Jennifer Lawrence, maybe she uses that bow for real.

The John Wayne/Weatherby Guide 1962-63 is the most sought after catalog. I bought mine several years ago for a small dollar. A friend of mine wants it but not for sale. I have been looking every now and then for another but with no luck.

Hunters and gun owners need to be more aggressive and open about what they do.

In today's culture, the masses equate meekness and sneaking around with weakness.

I would like to see a national Gun Owners Pride Parade with parades in major cities. If perverts can gain acceptance with their parade, then law-abiding gun owners should not be afraid to do the same!

Bing Crosby and Dean Martin, among others, used to make annual bird hunting trips here.

if you have not watched the movie 'Hatari' featuring John Wayne you really need to watch this, the movie is filmed in Tanzania with the plan being to trap big game for zoos from Giraffe, Wildebeest, Leopard and Rhino one of the great movie shots is they shoot a massive net over a large fig tree to catch monkeys seems like there where 100s in that tree, this was a all out movie....

Ford, the director of that film has also directed some great films starring John Wayne. One of my favourites is the "Searchers".I liked Hatari too-probably the best African movie.

Ford did not direct Hatari. Hawks did.

Ford directed the Clark Gable safari film that was a remake of red dust called Magambo!
