Too true.

As for Wolhuter's knife, I have only seen the photos, but it was apparently of good enough quality that he stole it from a friend, substituting one of lesser quality. Good thing, as it saved his life.

I remember Jim Corbett describe the time he carried a stabbing type knife the night he waited for a man-eater.The knife had a ding or mark for everyone of its victims and was previuosly owned by some murderer.I think a hunter should carry a knife. It is a symbol that they are hunters. Also, you don't have to bother anyone to borrow their knife while you are on a trip-something that has occurred to me at least a couple of times.

Yes I brought my own knife with me. The knife belonged to my father and came with the browning BLR he bought brand new in 1966. My dad was not much a hunter and didn't leave much behind when he died, but I know he would have been amazed that his knife was used by his son to cut the tail of an elephant he killed. That knife will be passed onto my daughter and used when I take her on safari.

I never found much use for a knife while on safari so I quit taking one. I sometimes take a Leatherman since I find the pliers more useful than the knife blade. I do take along a utility knife with a replaceable razor blade when elephant hunting. It does a much more efficient job in cutting the long cuts when skinning an elephant.

I always have my knife in my pocket. Now days I have to think about it and be more careful. I remember the first time I went through an airport with it. It was in the 70's. I reached in my pocket and felt it as we were going through security. The metal detector never went off.

I doubt I'll ever go on a ele hunt.

I have a knife every time I am hunting. Brought my big bone handled custom knife with me (had it 20 years been on every hunt is a lucky charm)to Africa and got some looks and some chuckles from other clients. Never really needed it but it was lucky. Killed some outstanding trophies. When I go on my Ele hunt next year I will be taking it for the tail

It's your hunt do what you would like to do...
As tomahawker mentions.....
I rolled up my sleeves and helped skin and cut up all of the animals I shot on my safari, for me it's fun and part of the hunt. You have to laugh and shake your head at the skinners, we can spend time and perhaps lots of money looking for the perfect knife while they are using a one dollar plastic handled steak knife that they rub on a rock or against each other and call it sharp.
Bring a knife, use it on the tail after you shoot your ele, if the situation permits help out for awhile then sit back watch or head home and have a drink to celebrate your success

Don't worry about how sharp your knife is. Do it the way of your forefathers, the way a great hunter like yourself should take in the glory of the hunt the way of the old ones. Chew it off with just your teeth. Only a great hunter like you could be worthy of the honor.

No go read my earlier post. You don't need a knife. Teeth were around long before knifes. I talked to several PHs at the Safari Club Show and they all agreed that that was the way to go. They would be speechless if they could see such a grand achievement. They did recommend you tell your PH ahead of time so he can instruct the skinners not to interfere.

Shootaway:

For the photo to have full value you would need to have a knife autographed by a celebrity then an Elephant on which to draw blood - one signed by MS would take the cake and make you Top Gun!

Shootaway reached out to me and requested a knife (Use Enough Gun, thank you for the referral). After looking at the photos on this thread and seeing how large an Elephant tail is, I decided to add a little length to my Drop Point Hunter. Below is the end result. The handle is Desert Ironwood and the blade length from the guard to the tip is 3 3/4". As soon as the sheath is made and the final edge has been put on it, it will be headed to Shootaway and accompanying him to Africa. I hope it gets to see some use.

Thanks Shootaway and thanks to everyone for looking,

Lee

They are high figure scales from Arizona Ironwood Distributors. There is a lot of figure, but there are also "eyes" that you would normally find on burl. I have been buying from them for a while and every set of scales they send is different; one of the things I like about ironwood.

I brought my own. Unfortunately, I took it with me on my last hunt, and the Dutch confiscated the thing. A $700 Emerson.

Moral, be careful about reading the fine print.

I took my favourate skinner along on my hunt. It is custom made and fits my hand like a glove. I cut the tail then handed it to the skinners. they loved it. Let them use it again to butcher up my Cape Buff.

It's a knife and meant to be used. The old bloke who made mine was happy to see how it held up after the crew used it and sharpened it. Even if sharpened on rocks back of other blades who cares. Just resharpen/edge when you get home.

Shootaway - Good call. Whatever knife you take, if you use it in the field you'll be filling it full of memories to cherish later. I'm a hopeless romantic and love my knives and blue-steel firearms for that vey reason -- memories, made in and on steel.

We're expecting the most well-illustrated hunt report ever. Please don't disappoint us.
