Having read about and then hearing first hand accounts thereof I have long been fascinated by South Sudan. The diversity of species that it held (holds?) made it almost unparalleled amongst other game rich areas of Africa. I recently read a book (Home from the Hill, Hilary Hook)whose author spent a considerable amount of time living, travelling in and occasionally hunting in the Sudan during the British colonial era. His descriptions of the landscape had me searching for more info and maps.

The history of the area is bloody and feudal from almost time immemorial. Whether or not we will see peace there and the return of safari hunting is a question that nobody can answer for now. But there is hope and hope is good.

On this link below there are some wonderful pictures of the landscape and wildlife of the modern and war ravaged South Sudan. Lets hope that one day Safari will return to Sudan

Strange that name should come up........ I'd have thought he must be dead by now but I twice met him many years ago & although don't have it any longer, once had a signed copy of his book.

The old fella was an absolute gentleman & IIRC, the BBC made a very interesting documentary about him & his return to the UK for the last few years of his life. tu2

Also FWIW, DDRHook who posts here & I have been right up to the border & the scenery is fantastic! Smiler ....... but don't expect sport hunting to return anytime soon.....

Thanks for that link. I have also read about Southern Sudan being the finest location for wildlife in all of Africa. Hopefully, the new country of South Sudan will develop it.

Wow is that neat!

Sounds like the proper steps are being taken to conserve the resource.

Definitely a must see.

Manyathelo,

Shoot our friend Nigel an e-mail. He and a South African (who is well connected in Sudan) that has a camp along Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda along the South Sudan border...went into Southern Sudan to assess the viability for hunting. The South African could get the rights to a hunting concession if it becomes viable. There assessment right now was that it was not...to dangerous still.

I think some safari hunting is being done in South Sudan now. Wink has spent some time there recently (not hunting) and may have some knowledge to share.

My wife's sister and her husband are going there in January as doctor missionaries.

We hope to visit them. they have promised to introduce me to some of the ministers. I wonder if it would be possible to arrange a hunting trip.

I have not found any safaris being offered at the moment.

Would be fun to hit the migration in between parks and take a kob, tiang and m. gazelle. and more importantly witness the migration.

When are we going?
Damn, that is some great pics.
Never thought there would be any elephants left.
I hope they won't go Kenya's way about hunting.

I have been reading quit a bit already on South Sudan. HAve to say it looks amazing. Actually unspoild nature with a huge migration that compares with the serengeti/mara migration. One of the better photo safari companies in Norway has their first trip in January, damn i wnat to go.

I hope they open for hunting, but I guess it will be with classical east africa prices. Then I can`t go Wink But maybe I get to read a hunt report from there here on AR, it helps Big Grin

I spoke to Dave Rademeyer while in Bangweulu back in 2005 he had recently had flown over some of the areas and said that there were plenty of Sitatunga and Elephant in the swamp.

The encouraging thing from these photos is that there is definitely a strong nucleus of certain species, if they can keep poaching at bay and sort out the violence there are wonderful possibilities. Mozambique ,whilst not quite in the same league as Sudan for chaos and mayhem, is a great example of a country and its game recovering from a civil war.

Africa has it's problems, but also heaps of potential!

I've just been doing some work in South Sudan (I'm an asset valuer specialising in real estate in emerging markets). IMHO the country has plenty of potential, but it will take some time to come good.

Manyathelo thanks for posting. Some breath taking scenery there. I would like to be 30 years younger so I may experience hunting there. Even 10 years might have the place safe enough to tour through there.
