My Mauser 66 in 9.3x64 shoots MOA, 293gn DWM FLs chrono 2480 and 258gn RWS 2680, handles nicely and I can pop on a 243 barrel and shoot 55gn handloads at 3850 with 0.6 MOA accuracy. Took a one ton camel a few weeks ago with one shot at 220 yards. Definitely not for sale. mike

AussieMike, Why do you taunt me so? I will probably just get another R93 barrel and live with that.

Easiest/cheapest way to go would be to have a CZ in 9.3 x 62 rechambered to 9.3 x 64 (and have the bolt face opened slightly). If you can't stand a long wait I'll sell you my CZ for $500.00. It has been bedded, and the set trigger replaced with a single stage - much less mushy. You could buy a Winchester Model 70 Classic for the conversion. That would require a new barrel which kicks the cost upward some. That is what I will likely do. I'm sure some manufacturers in Europe will crank one out for you. That won't require any fiddling aroound on your part, but be prepared to pay in Euros. lawndart

I have built a couple of 9.3x64s and they sure do compete with the 375 H&H and in a standard length action if that means anything and I am not sure it does...but its a grand and overlooked caliber..but since I am a .375 fan and have an old English bolt gun in that caliber, I sold all my 9.3x64s and recently sold my 9.3x62s, some of which are now in the hands of posters on AR...I guess in favor of my old 375 Mauser or maybe I just needed an excuse to build another rifle, and I shot enough Buffalo with both of them to satisfy my curiosity, but who knows what lurks in the heart and soul of a gun trading whore like myself.... bottom line, rest assured the 9.3x64 is Europes answer to the 375, and it has a few advantages over the old warhorse .375 for the all around title, It just may very well be the champion of the all around rifle, but in reality it probably will never compete with the .375 H&H for whatever reason......... I am more than familiar with the cartridge, Aleko keeps threatening to sell me a 9.3x64 barrel for my R93s (that Ray loves so much ) I just always wanted a Mauser 66 in that caliber. There is a custom FN on the http://www.champlinarms.com website that I like but I want something different.

Is not the 66 the Mauser with the telescoping bolt? If so, I think it sets the bbl back 2 inches and saves you on overall rifle length. What a great design!!

The design is similar to that of the R93 and KR1 but not quite.

My father gave me a 66 in .243 when I was looking to retire my 30-30. That was in the 70s and I still love it. I would also like to find another (larger caliber) barrel for it. 270, 30.06. or 9.3 - I would be up for about anything. Another problem with it is that I can't find higher scope rings to use on the B & L scope mount base. I would like to retire the 4x Weaver but the bolt won't clear the eye piece of a modern scope. It is an amazing rifle - way ahead of it's time Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

The Mod. 66 is one of the slickest, smoothest, neatest actions that I have ever owned, but alas I dumped mine as the stock design left me cold and the action dictated such a bulky Mossberg type stock that I sold the two I had..one a 357 and the other was a custom stocked 66 rifle in one of the big 500 bore calibers...Very short and compact even with a long barrel...I still have mixed emotions about them... What I can't get over is the differences in prices for used ones. I know a guy that wants E3500 for a 9.3x64 standard, and I know lots of guys who can't give away 30-06s and such for $1200. Feast or famine! There is a package deal with 3 barrels, 458, 375, and 7mm Von Hoffe for $3500ish somewhere on gunbroker or gunsamerica. I never shot one so I don't want to get into it that deep.

D99, Too bad you are not here in the States. I have a CZ550 in 9.3x64 which Danny Pedersen rechambered from the 62. The stock has been redone to include an ebony forend and grip cap and hand rubbed oil finish. The metal is done in a nice matte finish. Has about 30 rounds through it. I also have a pre 64 M70 that Danny did up for me in 9.3x64 which is why I don't need the CZ. Bob
