Most people just add 25lbs. per side to the weight in the pictures. Seriously I am sure it gets sold at some point and is not appreciated. Just my .02

Nah..... not really mate.

What usually happens in most African countries is that any tusks etc that are found and handed in, confiscated for whatever reason or the sport hunter can't or doesn't want to import etc etc then become property of the Govt/GD and (officially) go into store where they sit forever or are auctioned as a job lot if permission for a one off auction can be obtained from CITES.

I'm going from memory but seem to remember RSA, Zim, Tz, BW & Namibia at least have either had or asked for such auctions in recent years.

Whether any gets slipped into the illegal market is a different matter entirely but I'd guess some of it from some countries probably does.

Is there any place the hunter could store them in hopes of USFW coming to their senses?

Individual hunters could probably usually leave them with a trusted individual in the country the animal was taken in and hope to be able to import them at some time in the future but if you look at how long the Moz ban has been in force, they could be in for a very long wait.

There's no guarantee the ban will ever be lifted and also no guarantee that if it is lifted, that trophies taken during the ban period will be importable....... effectively, it's anyone's guess how and what they'd allow to happen.

Thanks for the info. Would it be legal to "trade" a taxidermist the tusks for a replica set or is that like selling them?

No. Post ban sport hunted ivory may not usually be sold or traded.

Buy a small home or at least rent a storage unit in a country where they are importable. I would think it is a bit easier getting stuff already legally exported from Africa into the US (post-ban) than it would be to get stuff imported directly from Africa. If not, at least the tusks are closer to home! It's really time for many US hunters to shift their focus north of the border in my opinion. For someone in Florida, I am wondering if the Bahamas might be an option? One hour flight Miami to Nassau!

In this case the outfitters should keep supplies for making a silicone rubber mold of the tusks for the client hunter to take home so a taxidermist could make a pair of replica tusks exactly like the actual tusks the client took.

That way, at least, the client would have the replicas along with pictures with the elephant for his trophy room.

My first elephant was shot in the 90's. I never got the tusks but know exactly where they are. Long story. I had a replica set made and am very happy with them.
