Trip Insurance

Hi Gang,

I know this has been covered but I was wondering about some up to date boots on the ground information.

Joyce and I are going to Antartica (no Penguin hunting) in January. The booking folks now require some type of travel insurance since Covid entered the world stage.

We have never bought trip insurance for any of our Africa trips. We likely wouldn't buy it for this trip either if we had a choice.

I researched for a couple days online and unbelievably 90% of the reviews I read regardless of company or policy are negative. Mostly complaints about reims of documentation needed and lost by the companies all adding up to endless delays of payment if payment ever happens at all.

Have any of you had trip insurance and actually used it with satisfactory easy and quick results? If so which company?

The price ranges are all over the place and if all the companies try to play the attrition game delaying payment then I'll pick the cheapest policy and call it good.

We already have medieval coverage with Global Rescue.

I used Travel Guard once and they paid quicker than I expected them to and with very little hassle.
After initial talks with an agent and getting a claim number, all I had to do was email copies of receipts for expenses.

Costco citi card has built in travel insurance.

If you need to check a box of having travel insurance. That might be a way to check the box,

We have used Travel Guard several times, had one claim when Rebecca broke her ankle in SA, requiring surgery. They reimbursed quickly and completely, even paying for missed hunting days and business class tickets for homeward flight. We continue to use their products.

First off, you might want to clarify what they mean by trip insurance.

If they mean medical/evacuation, that’s something like global rescue/medjet.

That’s pretty reasonable and logical for what the trip involves.

True trip insurance has a lot of holes in it. The exclusion list is huge, and it’s very costly.

I’m not sure they can mandate the trip insurance; but the Med evac insurance they can, and it would be foolish not to have something like that.
