Can anyone recommend an ammo carrier for long ctgs lke a 450 Dakota? I checked Midway and they have a leather Hunter that fits 460 Wea and holds 8 rounds or a cordura Uncle Mikes that holds 6 and claims to hold nitro ctgs. Both of these are fold down types with either 3 or 4 rounds in each section of the wallet. I was thinking of carrying two, one for solids and one for softs. Andy

I have a "Chamba Pouch" (see link below) and I am satisfied with it, but if you want a model that is handy for quick reloading you might prefer another model. I have the smaller one, but they say the larger one will accomodate up to .600 NE. http://www.drake.net/html/sale.html Regards, Martin ----------------------- A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition. - R. I have tried many types made from most materials, and in short the canvas one Cabellas carries, and thier shell belt are probably the most functional. Charlie

Jeff Wimmer made me an ammo carrier/belt that I used on my last trip to Africa. My PH immediately wanted it. The great thing about it are: 1. You can easily extract cartridges because there is "finger room" between slots so that it is very fast. 2. the material has some kind of lubrication that is slick so there is no sticking... but at the same time, it holds very securely. 3. The same carrier held .500 Jeffery and .375 cartridges just fine. Maybe Wimmer will comment on when his company will make them comercially available. Andy, I like the open belt type of cartridge carrier..I Carried 10 rounds in a 8 solids and 2 softs and the rifle was loaded with 4 solids a total of 14 rounds... I kept the softs on the opposits side of belt...I loaded with my right hand... Mike

Call Westley Richards here in the States. They carry that. In fact, they do make them specifically for the .450. They are somewhat expensive, but high quality. As you know, you get (usually) what you pay for anyway.

I would go to Cabela's they have a Boyts cnavas for 29.99 or you can get two Uncle Mike's corduras fir $6.00 each and then have the local shoemaker so them veritcallt that runs about $10 and you have a great belt for about $28.00 including the shipping from cabelas. This is sometimes referred to as the Ray Atkinson Special Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I used two different ammo pouchs, one each for the .416 Rem for the Buff and another for the .358 STA, for plains game. I kept them on the same belt which I put on while leaving the truck. It didn't matter which rifle I had, the ammo was always on the belt, with the different pouch donoting the specific ammo. I got mine from Lewis Drake of Murray, Ky. He has several as displayed in his booth at Vandalia Ohio for another week at the Grand Master trap shoot. If bought mine there last year. They also can be ordered. Good shooting. phurley

I make my own out of two of Cabellas black Nylon belts, sew them together and then sew the bottom loop shut..Works better than all the stuff I've tried... I see Cabelas has a new canvas type culling belt thats pretty cheap and should work well as the bottom is sewed shut also.. I don't like leather, it grabs, creates vertagre.. Sorry. But now that I own all 3, only my Africase holders actually get to go hunting. The leather is thicker, the stitching is stronger, they look better, and they are cartridge specific.

I use a 1 1/2" Murray belt and his ten round leather carriers. Easy on and easy off. Mr. Murray makes one size of his carrier for '06 based cases, another larger size for .375 based cases, and a still larger size for .416 Rigby and .460 Wby. based cases, and I use them all. They wear like iron and I have never had the slightest reason to complain. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

I ordered all of the Cabelas carriers that looked likely and sent them all back. They all had flaws in design or construction such as the Boyt that wasn't even sewn together correctly. Ended up getting one from Murray and can't imagine a better quality set-up. He'll be getting all my business for leather goods from now on. I quess I am old fashioned, but I have always prefered the shirts, vests and jackets with the built in shell loops. All of my bolt action rifles, I hunt everything with 7x57, 375 H&H, or if I need a stopper for up close work, 458 Lott, are the older Brno ZKK 600 and 602 rifles. The 602's are true magnum length actions with a magazine capasity of 4 rounds plus one in the chamber equaling 5 rounds. Buy wearing a shirt that holds at least 4 rounds and a vest that also holds at least 4 rounds, I have 13 rounds at my disposal. In this day and age of hunting I have never had a need for more ammo at any one time. The best place I have found in the U.S. to purchase quality clothing with shell loops is Cabels's. If you go to hunting clothing, then click on Safari Clothing you will see their selection. I use the Bretta Big 5 Shooting Shirts, Cabela's Rigby Vest and for cold morning or evenings the Bretta Kalahai Safari Jacket which also has shell loops. I have also found the Bretta Razorgrass Overlay Pants tobe of very good quality. In my opinion, if extra ammo is needed quickly, it s far easier to reach across my chest an grab the extra shells than to dig into my pockets, pull out a shell carrier, open it, take the shells out, put the shell carrier back in my pocket or drop it on the ground, and then load the rifle. These shirts, vests and jackets also have plenty of pockets for carrying everything and provie very good protection from the weather, bugs and things that stick you. Every day is a great day, some are just a whole lot better! Mauser Rifle Everyday is a great day, some days are just better than others!

I've used the cartridge carriers like those mentioned here (the ones that you put on your regular belt) and they do work find. I have ones made by both Murray and Africase. Both are very good. In my case, however, I usually have the need for 2 calibers of bullets as I'm hunting, which means that I need two ammo carriers. As the day passes, particularly at lunch and such, always having the carriers on me gets uncomfortable. As a result, I've found that using a belt just for my ammo that I can take on and off as needed is a much better way to go. I had Murray make me one for my .470 (the top belt pictured below) and I can slip on a .375 or .300 ammo carrier as needed. When the time comes that I don't need bullets strapped around my waist, I can easily slip off the belt and relax. For me, it's a much better deal.

I agree that a separate belt for ammo is better than carriers that slide onto your regular belt. It's very nice to be able to unbuckle that weight as needed without messing with your pants loops. Same with a pistol belt - never hang a sidearm on your normal belt. It needs to have it's own sturdy belt for support and easy on/off. ============================== "I'd love to be the one to disappoint you when I don't fall down" --Fred Durst

No need for that! Just use a separate belt to hold the ammo carriers. I do that, but keep the belt buckle in the rear and the ammo carriers in the front. WHen in the car, I drop the belt with ammo carriers. And, since the ammo carriers have a flap, the ammo does not get rained on, dusty, or hot in the sun. It's the best of both worlds.

Construction is key. africase makes every holder to fit every round perfectly. In some cases it takes time, these are hand made items, but the africase is the best cartridge carrier out there in leather Aleko Hits count, misses don't
