Trophy Odor
After 20 months, my trophies arrived yesterday and all 16 are in good shape. Included were a number of backskins, nicely tanned. I'm excited about getting them on the wall but honest to gosh the odor is so strong I'm not sure I want them in the house!
No, I'm not looking for someone to take them off my hands! Yet. My wife is being great about it but if this doesn't dissipate pretty quickly neither of us will be very happy.
What gives, guys?
The tanning isn't too bad; the dip and disinfect chemical odor is usually pretty strong, but the mothballs they use really stink! We found that by building a rack in the garage out of 2x4's, it allowed us to hang the hides and rugs open for a week. With a small portable fan running around the clock the smell was almost totally gone quickly.

Don't ever shoot an ibex.
I just let them sit in the shop/garage awhile and that has usually done the trick.
I found that my trophies from Namibia had less stink and the hides were softer but thay also seem to be more prone to slippage.

AtkinsonLet them air out, they will be fine. It may take a little while and you can spray them with bathroom deodorant of some kind.
Thanks guys, they are getting gradually less odiferous. Windows are open though!
I've put three on the wall. The best Impala being one. He looks absolutely regal.
