I’ve just finished an excellent book on elephants and hunting elephants. The book is named after the BaTonga tribal name given to Ron Thomson – MAHOHBOH - and it means “The great slayer of elephants”. The book was recently reprinted and is now available again. This book is written for hunters – old, new and aspiring. It was written by a very experienced elephant hunter that has killed in excess of 5,000 elephants during his career. I think he has seen it all. It contains such startling insight into the management needs of Africa’s elephants, rifles, calibers, bullets, on the hunting areas in which he hunted elephants, vital organs as well as advice on why big game animals sometimes attack and some times not. The second, greater part of the book contains a host of authentic and outstanding stories that will leave you spellbound. I could not put it down. It is a classic and sits on my bookshelf right next to the other books by Ron Thomson. I strongly recommend it. If you are interested in purchasing this book, contact Ron directly at Magron Publishers, e-mail: magron@ripplesoft.co.za Johan

E-Mail : magron @ ripplesoft.co.za Dear friend Ron Thomson’s Big Game Hunting Memoirs BOOK NUMBER ONE In the beginning “GOD CREATED MAN THE HUNTER” MAGRON PUBLISHERS are pleased to advise you that the completed manuscript for Book Number One in Ron Thomson’s planned six-book Big Game Hunting Memoir Series is now with the printers. It is entitled “GOD CREATED MAN THE HUNTER”. The layout of the book is in progress and the proofs still have to be read and approved before printing can commence. Unfortunately it is now not possible to have the book out by Christmas 2009. It will be available, however, in January 2010. The book will comprise circa. 360 pages. It will contain more than 60 photographs, other illustrations and three maps. The paper will be high quality 115 gsm with a matt finish. The book will be presented in hardcover and it will be covered with a laminated dust jacket. Gold foil lettering will appear on the spine and on the front face of the hard cover there will be a snarling leopard’s head embossed in gold. There will be a collector’s page in the front of the book on which will be inscribed the book’s number (1 to 1000) and the name of the person who purchases the book. These inscriptions will be written in calligraphy. The author will sign every book on the collector’s page. Those who purchase the book should spell out their names clearly when they place their orders so that no mistakes are made in the calligraphy work. The cost of this book is R 500 plus R50 for packaging, postal insurance and postage within South Africa. Total R550. The cost of packaging, postal insurance and AIRMAIL postage to destinations elsewhere in the world will cost an additional R 250. Total R 800. The high cost of airmail postage is occasioned by the extra mass of the high quality paper. MAHOHBOH MAGRON PUBLISHERS has re-printed Ron’s most popular book, MAHOHBOH (1000 copies). This book has been described as THE most definitive work on elephant hunting ever published. It contains detailed information on shot placement supported, inter alia, by photographs of an elephant bull that has been sawn in half to expose the location of its vital organs. It also contains elephant hunting stories that will make your mind boggle. MAHOHBOH is recommended as a “companion book” for the big game hunting memoir series which it compliments admirably. The MAHOHBOH book costs R350 plus R50 for packaging, postal insurance and surface postage charges inside South Africa. Total R 400. The cost for packaging, postal insurance and AIRMAIL postal charges to destinations elsewhere in the world will cost an additional R 250. Total R600. ORDER BY PHONE, LETTER OR EMAIL.

I agree Makohboh is an excellent book. The sections on wildlife biology are particularily well done, especially the discussion of the ecological impact of not sustainably utilizing elephants. The forest turned to desert photos are chilling, as is the theoretical animal overpopulation chart, especially when compared to a human population chart. Can't wait for his next book. I like all his work but my favourite and (IMO) the most informative is "Managing Our Wildlife Heritage" His article on the link above is incredible and proves the official KNP line was wrong from the get go.

+1 I read this book(& The Perfect Shot) just before hunting my elephant. When the time came for putting my book learning to use I hit the brain as my elephant moved out at 23 paces on an uphill slope. He went straight down. I felt that I could "see" the brain. Using what I learned form the book the shot was a piece of cake. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

Sorry Will, I don't know how else to describe it. My bull had been resting in a stand of mopane. After waiting some time for him to turn so that I could shoot through a small opening he finally decided to leave. As he shuffled through a 30 yard opening I realized this was my only chance. I swung my 375 and the bull went down. I didn't really need to think about shot placement. It was like I could see the brain.
