Tom,

I work with Mokore Safaris in Mozambique on Coutada 9. They do hunt cats with a light at night. I can't speak for other areas such as the Niassa Reserve which may have different regs.

I would seriously doubt a thermal scope would be allowed anywhere in Africa and I’m not sure you would even be allowed to temporarily export it from the US.

Not true Jerry, you can buy thermal scopes here and up to 3rd generation night sights. Not always legal for trophy hunting though, but you can buy it for say predator control...

If the bait is placed into or on the edge of deep thicket then your cat will feed during daylight hours after a couple of days. A trail cam will tell you when he is feeding and I suggest try that first otherwise you will be sitting long nights and if the Leopard scents or hears you then you are in for the long haul with very little sleep

I shot the only leopard I will ever shoot in 2013 in Chewore South where lights are not permitted. That cat illuminated by the golden orange rays of the setting sun is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I would not want to trade that memory for anything. Don’t cheat yourself out of an unforgettable experience by hunting with a light.

I've shot two leopard while hunting at night. Both were unforgettable experiences. When, through all of the hours of anticipation and waiting, the light suddenly comes on and that cat stares you down-right through you soul, with no seconds to spare to shoot, it will be with you forever. My last big male cat, pictured in the photo to the left, had killed a female leopard earlier in the day and later that evening we shot him off of her carcass that we had wired down. Exciting stuff for sure. tu2
