Looks like we might get to go on a plains game hunt early next year in SA. Been a while.

I remember that SA does not allow a hunter to bring in two rifles of the same caliber. Do they consider the 9,3x74R and the 9,3x62 Mauser to be the same caliber? (In other words does caliber really mean "bullet diameter" or "chambering" to them?)

Would like to take a 9,3x74R Chapuis and a bolt rifle. The little 9,3x62 CZ American is just such a handy little fella when compared with the M70 SS Classic in .375 H&H.

Thanks!

Mike

Mike,

Can't imagine anyone, including South African authorities, would view those two as the same caliber. Am sure that it's chambering rather than bullet diameter, but let's hear it from somebody in PHASA to be sure.

Regards, Tim

mstarling,

Although I can not say for sure and quote the exact paragraph of the regulation, I'm sure that they will be considered different. If your barrels are stamped appropriately i.e. differently; one stamped 9.3X74R and the other 9.3X62, I can not see anyone stopping you. A simple demonstration that one cartridge will not fit into the rifle of the other should do the trick.

In good hunting for a good deal for your 2009 plains game hunt.

Andrew McLaren.

One cannot cure:

Stupidity – nothing helps! Anti hunting sentiments – nothing helps! Put-‘n-Take Outfitters – money rules!

My very long ago ancestors needed and loved to eat meat. Today I still hunt!
