It's debateable whether you need medivac cover in RSA but if you want it then Global Rescue are the best by a country mile and you can sign up with them by clicking on the icons on the page I've given you or by clicking here:

Now , please clear the air. Did you actually use Global Rescue twice? Or do you mean you paid for the coverage twice? It's a big difference.

You're right it is a big difference. I meant to say I paid for the coverage twice.

We bought GR and Travel Guard for the whole group last trip.

Absolutely mandatory to get good baggage insurance, at a minimum. Good chance of theft at JNB. Cheapest is AMEX, if you buy your ticket with AMEX it costs about $12 to get baggage coverage.

Medevac not really necessary unless you have a health problem, or are hunting DG. You can get treatment in SA or Namibia for most stuff. Just check your health insurance will pay for it. If you want it, Travel Guard is cheaper than paying the Outfitter $10 per day, when you consider that the TG policy covers a bunch of stuff.

Trip cancellation is a good idea if your aifare is non-refundable. Otherwise it may be cheaper to pay the penalty.

Note, you have to buy the insurance within a few days of booking the trip. Otherwise they think you are setting them up.

Russ is correct about the timing. It is generally not that much time between your first payment (deposit or airfare) and when you have to buy the insurance. The length of time you have before the trip has nothing to do with the premium, something that baffles me. The premuium is a function of trip cost and your age.

If I do any good with my posts, it would be to insist that whatever insurance you buy, make sure it covers the financial default of the operator. Imagine going on a 21 day, prepaying your trophy fees, then finding out during your trip that your booking agent filed BK. You would be out the TF deposit, but still owe the operator. Almost as bad as getting bit by a black mamba...

We recommend Travel Guard for trip cancellation and Global Rescue for the medical evacuation.
