Tanzania calls for international support against poaching

Tanzania has called on international agencies, including Interpol, to join its efforts to curb poaching at the conclusion of a two-day summit in Arusha to stop wildlife crime and advance wildlife conservation, Tanzania's The Guardian reported Tuesday (November 11th).

"Poaching targets elephants for their ivory because of high demand and prices in the international black market," Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda said at the conclusion of the weekend summit.

"As a country, we call on regional and international communities to co-operate with us in undertaking this important, urgent and demanding task," he said.

Organised poaching networks operating inside and outside Tanzania sustain the illegal ivory trade and it is difficult for the country to stop them, Pinda said.

"Despite the commitment and efforts of the government there have been many challenges, including inadequate financial and human resources that limits implementation of important initiatives and enforcement of the law," he said.

The UK-based Environmental Investigation Agency warned last week that Tanzania's elephant population could drop to 55,000 animals by 2015 due to poaching.
