Friday May 21, 2010 Local News TANAPA acts on destructive jumbos MUGINI JACOB in Musoma, 20th May 2010 @ 12:00, THE Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) has agreed to start deploying game rangers to control stray elephants in villages adjacent to the world famous Serengeti National Park(SENAPA), Mara Regional Commissioner (RC) Colonel Enos Mfuru has announced. Latest reports from Serengeti District officials had it that a group of jumbos had invaded and destroyed crops in farms in some villages of the district whose large part is made up of game protected areas. According to the RC, TANAPA will deploy sufficient game rangers in all villages prone to destruction by the jumbos whenever the need arises. "We have agreed with TANAPA that I will be alerting them to assign game rangers when the elephants invade the farms", Colonel Mfuru told a meeting in Musoma attended by senior leaders from all districts in region on Wednesday. TANAPA will be picking the rangers from Manyara and Tarangire National Parks to do the assignment, the RC hinted. But he challenged members of parliament (MPs) hailing from areas prone to destructive jumbos to find a lasting solution to the problem. He mentioned districts with some villages affected by destructive jumbos in Mara as Serengeti, Bunda and Tarime.
