I'm thinking of getting a few gunslips made out of the elephant hide I have from this summer, and am wondering if I might as well look into having anything else made at the same time. An ammo belt for example, or a belt for everyday use.

Have any of you had things made from ele hide?

Any suggestions of what else besides gunslips might be an idea to have made?

I had mine made into a pair of Boots, A Belt, and am working on a table that will have a elephant leather top. Sky is the limit if you have enough leather and can find qualified people to do the work.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! How did you have your hide tanned and by whom? I had the ears of my elephant made into two sides each and tanned by Zimmerman LTD in Narirobi.I had great belts and a pair of boots for my brother made 30 yrs. ago. The belt is still holding my pants up.

I had boots made and am now I'm having some gun slips done. Tom Hardesty fromm Atcheson's Taxidermy is having a local guy in Butte do the slips and I'm expecting them to be very reasonably priced. Evidently he has a shoe shop but does great skin work.

I had all the work done by a shop in Zim. If you provide the leather they take care of the rest. Gun slips were $150, Shoes were $89, Belt was $10. Very cost effective!

Roscoe,

Was the quality of workmanship good in Zim? I have the impression that it can be either great, or the opposite, depending on the phase of the moon, or which way the wind blows!

Erik,
The company I used did good work. I think they make many of the leather goods for WR and Courtney. I was amazed when I went into their shop and saw all the items they craft. They did have one gun slip with holes. I assume they were in the leather prior to making the case. The holes were repaired but looked a little hokey! This slip was being sold as a second for half price. To sum it up, the quality may be less than that of items made here in the states but the prices are lower.

BOOTS!

Definately. Smiler Three pairs if I could swing it with the right bootsmith.

A pair of full westerns, ropers and some lace up hikers.

ErikD,

I bought an old oak love seat and covered the back and sides with th elephant hide. The seat was cow leather as I only had a couple panels tanned.

Though I've never killed an elephant nor posses the urge to do so my father killed 3 bulls in his lifetime.
One of which he used 4 lower legs and feet from to form the supports to a poker table. The table top was covered with elephant leather.
Though alot of chips got passed around that table in his lifetime no beverages were EVER allowed near it!
