4457 form for AMMO - Is it needed?

Ackley Improved User4457 form for AMMO - Is it needed?
Is a 4457 form needed for the AMMO? The 4457 is clearly needed for the GUN.
If so, can you just write on the current 4457 the ammo you'll be taking?
All the other Obama nonsense has been cancelled.

StonecreekThe form 4457 is to provide evidence to U.S. Customs that an item you are bringing back into the country was what you left the country with and not purchased abroad, therefore not subject to customs duties.
If you fear that U.S. Customs will think that your left-over ammunition was actually purchased abroad and you want to prove to them that it was purchased domestically, then by all means put it on your 4457 (if you can figure out a way to assign it a serial number or other unique identifier). The same thing applies to cameras, watches, jewelry, musical instruments, computers, or anything else which you feel is subject to being thought to have been purchased overseas.
In other words, don't attempt to put your ammunition on a 4457. It will just cause confusion. While some foreign officials somehow regard the U.S. Customs 4457 as a "gun permit" and will ask for it as a matter of course, I've never heard of them asking to see ammunition listed on the 4457 -- although that is not beyond the realm of possibility from someone who is attempting to shake you down for a bribe. But such an unethical official will find any number of other excuses to try to rob you, so having the ammunition inappropriately on a 4457 will be of no value in avoiding problems.

PSmithI am taking the receipts for the ammo with me in case I need to prove I bought it in the USA.

Heym 450/400Not trying to start a classic AR pissing match but... why bring ammo back?
09 July 2015, 22:01
PSmithWell, I am planning to leave any leftover .30-'06, .300WM, and .416 Rigby ammo with my PH.
However, I am not going to leave the .450 No. 2 that cost me $18 per round if there is any of that unused.

If you are flying British air remember that bringing that ammo back will cost you 50 Pounds as well so factor in that cost.
I left my 450NE 3 1/4 leftovers with Derek as well as the 7 x 57. That said, I hand load so the 450NE didn't cost me $18/round.

Heym 450/400Point taken..
On my first trip to Africa I brought 4 boxes of 300wsm with me. Half way through the safari they invited me to a springbok cull at a neighboring ranch. We shot well over 200 springbok in one day and I was quickly out of ammo. When I got back to the lodge wouldn't you know it, the previous hunter left two boxs of ammo that I was more than happy to have. I decided to leave whatever I had on my return trips to Africa. I was able to take another 3 or 4 animals with my rifle instead of having to switch to a camp gun. Not a huge deal but you never know when someone might need it.

Ackley Improved UserThanks guys for the replies - I'm thinking I'll leave the ammo in Moz. Maybe, I'll get to shoot it all.

Scott PowellFunny how I always seem to shoot up all my ammo on every trip :-)

Yep, I manage to shoot all my handloads and the box of factory loads that I bring on every trip.

I always leave my excess ammo. Sure its expensive but the it's one thing a PH really appreciates. Ammo is getting harder to come by in a place like Zimbabwe.

GrumulkinLeaving ammo in Africa is, I believe, contrary to U. S. Customs laws; not that you would be likely to get caught.
On departing South Africa last time, SAPS wished to count my ammo. If I didn't have any there might have been a problem though I don't know how much of a problem.

Not a problem at all. You just "shot" it all!

Use Enough GunI've never put ammunition on a 4457. Ammo is an expendable item with no serial number. 4457s do not expire. Just asking for trouble doing so. Why give the government another excuse to require everyone to get a 4457 for another hunting item? Might as well put your packs of chewing gum on there as well.
