Capetown in early August?

I'm considering following up my hunt in the Okavago delta with a few days somewhere nice that's not in the bush. My wife is coming along and her idea getting out in the wilds is a window airconditioner and the nature channel. Since she's being a sport about the bush I'd like to show her part of Africa that doesn't require sleeping in a tent. I am giving Capetown some thought but is early August to cold and Rainy? Any other ideas? I'm open to anything?
Thanks

You'll find Capetown in August cool and perhaps not to your wife's liking. How about a couple of days at one of those luxury safari lodges on the okavango. Very plush!

I just read your other post. Vic Falls would be much better than Capetown. Try the Victory Falls Hotel. Very "Old Colonial" and romantic. She'll love it.

Mark

We spent a few days in Cape Town after our hunt in August 2001.

I don't recall it being to cool really. It was chilly and damp out at the Cape Point but otherwise very nice.

I recommend the Commodore Hotel in the V&A Wharf area. Yes, it's expensive but it is VERY nice.

If you'd like a good tour guide I have one I'll recommend. While your there, the wine country is very interesting as well. And the view from the top of Table Mountain should not be missed.

PM if you want the tour guide info!

I agree with LHowell. Have stayed in Capetown in August. It can get cool and sometimes table mountain is obscured by clouds. However, the Commodore is very nice as well as the surounding wharf area. Several day tours are can also be taken.
Vic Falls is also very nice and your dollars at the current exchange rate provides for some good bargins when shopping.

Terry,

I spent a few weeks in the Cape Town area in the end of July and early august. Although it can get cool, and it can rain now and then, it's nothing worse than what you'd encounter if you live in the northern hemisphere.

But!, although Cape Town is a nice place with various things to do, it is after all just another city. And if you're travelling from so far away to visit africa, then I'd suggest you spend as much time as possible away from big citys and such. A city is a city no matter where in the world it is. A trip to a luxery lodge in Vic Falls or simular would be much more worth while IMO. And I'm sure that your wife will agree once she gets over there. Every second in africa will count, and using time in big city might be something you both will regret later.

If in the Cape Town region a trip or couple of days in the Stellenbosch area might be nice for your wife.

Wineries, vineyards (in winter dormancy unfortunately), Cape Dutch architecture, wines and good food.

A nice region not far from Cape Town to use as a sight seeing base is Paarl. It's in one of the wine growing regions, close to the others, and Cape Town, Cape Point, and other venues are within an hour or so drive. There are some very nice B&Bs in the area that are set up in some magnificient Cape Manor houses and estates. Try a Google search for Paaarl. Also, go to www.paarlonline.com[/URL] One place my wife and I stayed at and loved in Paarl is Mountain Shadows. They will pick you up at the airport, and also arrange for, and take you sightseeing.

I stayed at the Commodore in late April last year and really enjoyed it. Wlaking distance to the wharf with some really great restaraunts. Enjoyed going to Table Mountain and bartering in Green Market Square (but dont wander too far off...gets spooky fast in that area!). The hotel is very good about storing your guns in their safe. I will definitely stay there in the future.

A friend of mine runs a company here in South Africa that puts together a selection of itineraries for all kinds of tourism (except hunting). All you would have to do is give him some kind of idea of the areas you would like to visit and what you might like to do.

His itineraries will include everything from hotels to hire cars to restaurants and everything in between.

He's extremely experienced and will offer you a choice of prices and quality and I can highly reccommend him.......you can contact him at john@detra.co.za
