There was a time not very long ago when many US taxidermists were not all that familiar with African mounts. I don't know how long ago you Grandfather took these or where the work was done, but I believe that several of the others have touched on the problem. It may be an unintentional "Sitakudu" or "BushBatunga."

You ought to look around and see if there are trophy photos, and from those see if the animals can be id'd and the "mystery" solved.

I know that all of us wish we could have hunted Africa when your Grandfather did! If he has any diaries, I'd love to see some extracts from them. Ku-dude

Ku,

Yes, he was fortunate indeed to have hunted Botswana just as the safari industry there was just getting started. Game was very plentiful and the safari was conducted in the traditional tented style. His WH (that's what they called them back then) was a relatively well known hunter who came down from Kenya to open up the safari business in Bots. His name was John Dugmore and I know he was an acquaintence of our late friend George Hoffmann. During their safari, another PH who had finished with his clients joined them in camp and as my Grandmother related to me recently, loved to play the guitar at the campfire at night and sing and drink. And drink. She described him as actually being quite the looker. His initials were PHC.

During the safari, he was able of course to hunt lion and in fact this was the first animal he took. Unfortunately, that's come to an end in Botswana. And they have some incredible lion in Bots. It was a full 30 day safari and he hunted both the Kalihari and the Okovango. His favorite story was hunting in the dugout canoe for the Sitatunga. He even passed on elephant there because hunters back then didn't realize the short thick ivory they carried would weigh as much as the long slender ivory of East Africa. It was quite an adventure back then.
