Hunting Report subscriber Benjamin Schaub took a nice, mature lion in Burkina Faso. While he may not have the biggest mane, I think as long as he's mature, a lion is a lion.

Burkina Faso is not the first place I'd think of for lion, but this is a reminder that there are some overlooked opportunities out there.

And while on the subject of lion, my latest Safari Times arrived yesterday and has an article about the work SCI and SCIF say they have done on the issue. I didn't know before, but SCIF says they have been working hard on the lion issue and they are ready with money to help implement lion management plans once they're written. Check it out.

A friend of mine has been many time in Burkina Faso and in Benin, he always told me that it is a really dangerous hunt, made on tracks and not waiting in a blind near the bait. Dangerous also because often made in high dry grass.

DaggaBoy, don't you know that is just window dressing at least according to Saeed and Steve. SCI or SCIF does nothing for Africa. They just rip off the outfitters from Africa by taking HUGH sums of monies and giving nothing in return.

A friend was just hunting in Benin and said he almost got a lion. That's another country that doesn't immediately come to mind when thinking of a lion hunt. But I'd take one wherever I could get one.
You don't generally get the big manes in those countries, but what a hunt!

DaggeBoy, when you shoot yours and take the photos do yourself a favor and clean up the blood, unlike Mr. Schaub did. You never know where your photo will end up. It's a nice cat with a nice head, but the photo would have been much classier and in better taste without the blood splattered on the animal's left side.

A drop in the ocean, compared to all the money they pocket.

Ambushing game is against the law, let alone baiting. It's all spooring and yes mostly in high grass or dry river beds. Are shot bachelor males only.

When there a Russian arrived with a spanking new 500NE Blaser. The very first morning he was guided to a fine lion. The popov removed the cartridges and shot twice, without the lion taking notice. Once again he mimicked a shot and the lion got away slowly. His pal was filming the scene and I saw the whole show in the camp.
That was a really fine orange maned lion, a far better mane than what is on this picture.

Most definitely and the guy on the right seemed to miss the boat on...1...2...3...cheese! Might have been drunk or something. Very interesting hunt none the less. A tracking lion hunt is about as appealing as it gets from me.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I hope we can still hunt lion when I've managed to scrape together enough money to do it. With the big push to get them uplisted to CITES Appendix I that's a big question.

I'm glad to see SCIF involved, but have to admit I'm curious how much money they have spent on it. It has to be a pretty good chunk. Does anybody know how to find that out?
