Trophy Shipment on USDA Hold
Trophy Shipment on USDA Hold
Greetings All,
I just got a call from Coppersmith regarding my shipment of African trophies. They advised the the USDA has put a hold on the shipment because it contains Warthogs. They state that the whole shipment has to go to a USDA approved taxidermist for inspection and blessing.
My question is, has anyone had this happen before and how much is a reasonable fee, for the taxidermist? I'm not fond of paying ground transportation to the taxidermist, as I was planning on picking the crate at the airport. But, it is, what it is.
TIA
Will

wwgreenerI was told by the taxidermist in South Africa that my warthog skull had to be "fully processed" or it must ship separately and be handled differently than the other trophies. Mine was mounted euro style and shipped with everything else and there were no issues.

K EvansEvery shipment I've received has been held in either Atlanta or NYC for USDA hold, including wart hogs and bush pigs. I've never had to have a taxidermist inspection, that's a new one on me, but I clear my own trophies. They usually have only remained on hold for about 3 days.

Whats crazy is all the taxidermy is done. Mostly euro mounts with a couple pedestal mounts, with accompanying certificate of of processing. Now it appears that I have to have the whole crate processed and fumigated again.
Our government at it finest.

LHeym500My boar mount and skull had to be held for USDA.
Is it marked on the paperwork as finished. The normal way was only if it was raw/dip pack of pigs did it need to go to an approved place. If you can prove warthog is not just dip/pack it should be all good. I would tell your agent at coppersmith to make some calls and look in to it more. If not call coppersmith main office

Will, this has been my experience also. If it is a finished mount, either European or shoulder mount, it shouldn’t need taxidermist inspection. It WILL need the USDA approval.

I hate to think of what your storage charges are. Cape Buffalo trophy fee all over again, I bet.
Finished trophies should be OK unless there has been a change. Check with Coppersmith.

MARK H. YOUNGWill,
I take it back. As others have said if all are finished mounts there should be no issue and you should be able to clear them. My clients have had a couple of glitches in the past and it was always because of the paperwork being incorrect and not the trophies themselves. Customs doesn't care much what's in your crate. They're far more interested in perfect paperwork.

BuffHunter63I think USDA holds are the norm nowadays. You just have to be patient and wait it out.
Might be the deep state antis at work.
