Can anyone point me at an old style REAL bush jacket maker. There are some out there but they are way expensive, like $300.

As with all things in life, you get what you pay for but you could start your research here.

FWIW, Beretta used to make a superb one. I believe it's now out of production but you might get lucky if you can find someone who still has it in stock.

Alternatively, if you're not in too much of a hurry and don't mind waiting, I happen to know that a new company is going to put what I believe will be a very good version on the market in the next few months....... It's very good quality so don't expect it to be cheap though.

Among several other good things about Africa are the abundance of local tailors, some of whom probably do a better job than factory or mass produced items of clothing.

I had a sleeveless Beretta which did in fact set me back around Euro 200 at the time but the material eventually frayed to hell and gone after a couple of well worn years (not bitching about it either).
I gave it to a local guy who recycled the zips and even the original brass buttons and turned out a photocopy of the original using a heavy gauge khaki material for a pittance.
Now you know why a lot of factories have been moved to China - goods produced for a pittance and sold for an arm and a leg ..... and some people gripe about the cost of a charter. Wink

Lost Worlds makes what looks to be a serious range of bush jackets, but they are expensive. Look in the "sales" section as one is there that may fit you.

Otherwise go on e-bay and look for an old Willis & Geiger or, maybe, even an older Banana Republic.

Regards, Tim

I can't tell you more at the moment because I'm sworn to secrecy I'm afraid but keep an eye on shakariconnection.com in the next few months and I'm sure something will appear. Wink

Filson - Might as well have the best! They make a classic Bush Jacket for around $200.

And they will make items from old, no longer current patterns as well. Some years ago I had them make a safari coat for me. It had been out of production for a long time but they keep all their patterns. I have never seen another like it and have worn it on safari hunts. BTW, I sent them empty shell cases and had them reinforce the shell loops on the jacket to hold my large bore cartridges. Of course you will pay a premium for all this but Filson is a quality company with a long history.

There is a small gun store just outside of Katy 1-10 and Fry road exit that bought up a bunch of Berreta clothing including some safari jackets and vests. They are liquidating for 50 to 75 percent off list.
They might have what you are looking for its called AJC sports.

In the classic african safari days in Kenya a client got new safari clothes made in 2 days by Indian taylors in Nairobi on arrival!

Today it might be worth starting a business of making such classing clothes in Vietnam or Cambodia where they have a garment industry that operate on low costs.

Shakari, I love your car! I used to have one years ago just like it. Mine however was rough to say the least. I had two consecutive VW camper vans in college but after college I sold the last one and bought a beat up Wagoneer for $700. Since then I switched to Range Rovers and I'm on my third one now. I love the Land Rovers dearly but I still miss that old Wagoneer. Had it been as nice as yours I would have kept it too.

Rick,

The Jeep was made in 1982 and I've owned her for about 10 years. Original mileage since new is about 130K Kms (NOT miles) and about half that was with me. I've even taken her to Botswana a few times and she's never let me down......... my only problem is she's a thirsty old girl because she has the 5.9 litre V8 AMC 360 engine.

Funny how Range Rover forget about the Wagoneer when they make their oft repeated claim that they produced the first luxury 4x4...... Jeep beat 'em to it by a good many years and they did a better job of it as well. Smiler

Cecil,

I reckon if they re-introduced them with a good but more fuel efficient engine and air bags, they'd still be a best selling 4x4 but there is someone who comes close to producing new ones. Take a look at www.grandwagoneer.com.

His vehicles are beautiful but I'd bet they're a hell of a price.

Fujo,

It took a few months to get here but it arrived last January but she arrived without a scratch and is now taxed, tested and registered with a Portuguese registration and they let me bring her in free of import tax etc.

The bad news is I currently have to pay a ridiculous amount of annual road tax +/-E1000 per year but I've now found out I can have the car examined by the PT version of the AA and have them classify her as a car of historical interest and she then becomes free of road tax.

Generally,

Glad you enjoy her chaps..... I simply adore that car! Smiler

No doubt the Toyotas are bloody good vehicles but I always felt their rear suspension was a bit uncomfortable to ride on and their lack of a locking diff made them slightly less able than the Landy when the going got tough but now the new one has a locking diff those criticisms may not be valid any more.

Then again, maybe I'm just an old fart that likes things the way they were in the good old days! rotflmo tu2

I've read about this, I believe they were called Ahmed Brothers. I remember when Abercrombie & Fitch and Banana republic used to sell high-end safari duds. Even Orvis has discontinued that kind of stuff. Guess there isn't much of a market for it.

Anyway, here's a nice one from Kevin's, and it not very expensive.

Yep, reminiscing those days takes you back into post adolescence when the birds came by the handful and running a L/R was a bunch of b/f spanners in one hand and a half empty wallet in the other Big Grin

As we matured we wanted less hassles so we clipped the feathers off one bird and tamed it, flogged the Landy with its useless spanners and bought a reliable Japanese wagon instead ! dancing

I certainly can't argue about reliability..... Toyotas have that in spades but somehow lack the character and style of the Land Rovers.

Funny thing, an old Landy just looks right with a couple of old style car hubcaps with a pile of smoldering elephant droppings on the roof rack but do the same thing to a Land Cruiser and they just don't look right to me....... I guess it's all about old school style which takes me back to maybe becoming an old fart! Wink

But then again, the Wagoneers have style, looks, comfort, power and reliability........ it's just a shame that Jeep's idea if in-car entertainment was watching the fuel level needle dropping at an alarming rate! rotflmo

Yes I've done it .I'm retired so time is not the problem ,though it doesn't take forever.

Boyt Harness folks have a very nice Bush coat and is well made....holds up....and Tony C. (CEO) is a great hunter too...so designed with expereince!!
I bought mine at he grand opening of the Jack O'Connor Museum and it carries the JOC Logo with a nice Dall ram in the logo. Gets lots of comments...BTW Boyt Harness is a sponsor and Tony is on the Board too.
Note- in addition to the full line of Boyt clothing line at the Museum....I recently saw the FANTASTIC first Dangerous Game Rifle for their annual fund raising Raffle by Roger Biesen. Simply SSSPECTACULARRRR!! He did a series of 5 JOC Clone 270's....I didn't win any of them but I did buy tickets for the DGR!!

Its winter and Xmas is approaching - there's a lot of needy homeless people out there braving the cold.

No problem with that, as I've donated a dung pot of clothes to local shelters. In fact, I hope to see some of my clothes on the backs of people I've tried to help out. However, we're looking at nearly 80 degrees F here in Texas for December 1st and I don't want anyone to overheat. In all honesty, I'm just trying to help a fellow out. Sorry if that rubbed you the wrong way.
