I'm hoping there are a few experenced judges out there as I'm in need of a quick guestimate of the weight of 2 elephant tusks that are approximately;

#1; 3.5" diameter at the root and 50" along the curve

#2 3.75" diameter and 48" along the curve.

Gratefully

What's the circumference. I can't remember the formula. I'd like to make a guess.

Depends on the size of the nerve. If you have that much info, I'm surprised you don't have the weight also or can't get access to them.

A formula that I have used on a few sets of tsks that gave a fairly accurate estimate is:
The length of the tusk outside the lip (in feet)] X [tusk circumference at the lip (in inches)] then subtract 10% for each inch of circumference under 18 inches. As an example, if a tusk were 42 inches long (3.5 feet) and had a 17 inch lip circumference the weight would be 3.5 x 17 = 59.5 less 10% = 53.5 pounds.

These are very thin tusks. When you crunch the numbers (C = d x pi), their circumference at the base (which is obviously more than the circumference at the lip), comes to around 12 inches apiece.

I'd guess around 20 or so pounds each.

Thanks for all the advice.

I know that there are many variables such as root depth, consistant shickness vs drastic taper etc.

They are well attached about 12 feet up on a wall. I will eventually have access and be able to weigh them and let you know what who's clossest!

Best Regards

Mike,
As an aside, my compliments on the mountain goat you displayed at DSC last year. It was the best of the show in my opinion.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Allen:

Thanks! I had hoped to have another of our TX clients African lion completed and deliverd to the show this year but Swiss Air sent it on a 45 day world tour and it is just now at the tannery so might not get it completed.

Best Regards

I just measured one on the coffee table. Using position of lip as discoloration point on the tusk, the circumference is 15" and length is 28". Stamped weight is 45.3 lbs. For what it's worth.

Thanks for all the in put. Now that they are down and all the hardware removed one was 19.5 and the other 20.25 lbs.

A paper inside one base indicated cow elephant 1957 Kenya.

Best regards
