North Tanzania for Cape buffalo?

I've hunted southern Zim a number of times, but my wife has expressed interest in seeing the Ngorongoro Crater in north Tanzania. I suspect she'd like to see Kilimanjaro (not climb it!) and possibly a national park like Serengeti or Tarangire.

I know nothing about Tanzania, but I'd like to hunt a Cape buffalo during the visit. Is this feasible or worthwhile, or not really practical? It looks like the Maswa Game Reserve is in that area. If practical, do any of you have experience with a good outfitter that could help arrange such an adventure?

Can you readily fly into Arusha, or do you need to fly into Dar es Salaam and then go by vehicle or Cessna? Many thanks!

There are a number of northern Tanzania outfits that can offer buffalo.

Maswa through Bushman (or talk with a PH who is on good relations with them is a great choice. It’s relatively expensive by most standards, but probably the best single place I have hunted. I shot my best buffalo there.

The various Tarangire blocks were great when I hunted Lokisale, but there has been some phototourism incursion there… limiting the access to some of the better buff areas there.

If you time it right (when the buff come out of the park) it can be amazingly good.

The lake natron areas have more of the classic East African plains game, and are northern Tanzania, but not on the border.

Lots of area, so hard to generalize.

Some excellent specimens in Maswa .... recently saw photos of 4 taken in the last couple of weeks which were very impressive.

The Masailand areas bordering Tarangire have all but been destroyed by either photo-tourism or human encroachment interfering with the migratory corridors.

Maswa is a tremendous buffalo area with some real great bulls. For sure take your wife and go to the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro. The crater is spectular. Trust me you will have trip of a lifetime. There are other good areas for buff also in Masailand, just get a lot of info from outfitters before you book. Can't recommend this are highly enough.

The best buffalo hunting experience in Africa is in northern Tanzania, doing one of the mountain buffalo hunts. Very hard hunting, but incredibly rewarding and unlike any other buffalo hunt in Africa.

It looks like Bushman has a new owner. The current website shows them using a Masai area but not Maswa.

I'd appreciate any recommendations for good outfitters using Maswa that might help arrange this hunt.

One of my neighbors has hunted with Michel Mantheakis several times and recommended him to me.

I dont think Michel has buffalo in his Masailand area (Longido), only in the West (Lukwati).

England,

I live and work in northern Tanzania and could offer some suggestions on both the photographic and hunting side. Combining the two would make a great trip. You can PM me or email me at nymanerik90@gmail.com

All the best!
