Guys,

I will be in Dallas for a golf tournament this weekend. Is there a gun store or taxidermy shop I should visit?

Thanks!

Beretta shop in Highland Park Village
Holland and Holland shop on the second story of a jewelery store on Preston road in Highland Park.
Scheels, Cabelas, etc.
Ray's gun shop on Singleton Ave. Probably the oldest gun shop in Dallas.

Good list, if I could only do one of these I’d choose Ray’s…

I don't remember the place but I think there is a museum that has a lot of the trophies of Elgin Gates.

So Rays is still in business!

I bought my S&W M19 there many years ago!
One of my better buys.

Todd, that begs the question…what all do you know about Harry Hines Blvd?

How about strokers biker bar/ice house (Harry Hines) on Saturday or Sunday? Will be hopping if it is not raining.

Cool bikes!
Don't worry just wear jeans and T shirt.
Go in golf atire and you might get some strange looks. Very casual. Worth a visit for a burger and beer.

I echo all the above. One I will add is Jackson Arms/Armory if you’re interested in vintage and surplus. It’s small, but densely packed. It’s located in Snyder Plaza in University Park.

I'll take the fifth on that one Karl!!

I have been to Stroker's Biker Bar enough times back in my Harley riding days to second eezridr's comments. Cool place to hang out, especially if you're into bikes.

Being from South Texas originally and Houston for the last 35 years, the only redeeming quality I've found in Dallas is DSC. Just joking and and not totally true. I like the Adolphus Hotel, where I generally stay when I'm there on business. When I was clerking in Dallas I used to go the the Abercrombie and Fitch store a lot, and look at rifles and such, but A&F has changed since then. But never found anything interesting to do there. Which is why I settled in Houston.

Agree with you about Dallas. But you missed the best part of the metroplex ... Fort Worth. Night and day different from Dallas. Life is too short to live in Dallas!!

Todd, you're right of course. I've had a lot of cases in Tarrant County over the last 34 years and Fort Worth is a great town.

Fort Worth is great, but I’m stuck in Dallas. Dallas has faults, but I have an issue with a Houstonite talking bad about Dallas! At least it didn’t come from an Austinite! Haha.

Marcus,

Not talking bad about Dallas, I just never felt like I fit in. Houston definitely has its clicks, but nothing like Dallas. I went to private schools growing up, but Catholic schools, not the same thing, apparently. Same thing in Houston. I didn't belong to a fraternity in college because I was too busy with sports and they were banned at my college, apparently due to past bad behavior. And, coming out of law school flat broke I couldn't afford to live in Highland Park.

Plus if I get any time off, I like salt water fishing and hunting, and Dallas was just too far from the coast where I grew up.

Don't get me started on Austin. It has changed so much it's ridiculous since the tech companies have come in. It's been awhile but I was there to try to settle a case that was starting trial. I got there after voir dire and a jury was already in the box. My first question to defense counsel was who the hell did you strike? It was ugly. Had three ponytails (referring to men with pony tails -- an almost automatic strike for me), one of which was the spitting image of Jerry Garcia, tie dye T-shirt and all. And yes, while I worked on it for two weeks during trial, I couldn't get it settled and it was brutal, as predicted from the moment I saw that jury. But neither Dallas nor Houston are much better on that count today.

I was just joking with you. The big cities in Texas are nothing like they once were. Fort Worth is definitely more my speed.

I’ve never had a jury trial in Travis County, but argued a TRO against TPWD/AG’s office there. I was a baby lawyer then. My clients were going to have their captive bred deer herd euthanized because “suspicion” of CWD without any proof.

TPWD did go on a whack and stack crusade against deer farmers. I tried to argue captive bred deer should be considered as livestock and not property of the state.

The judge liked my argument, but I couldn’t change the statute. It was actually a case different organizations were watching and hoping for us to prevail. We did not.

I’m not a big tree head 240” high fence hunter, but people should have that option if they want. I still believe in my argument 11-12 years ago.

The herd was killed by wardens using rim fires from pickup beds. My clients then had to pay for testing and disposal. We couldn’t even donate venison to shelters. TPWD took all the breeder buck antlers.

After testing; 0 CWD present.

I wasn’t licensed in federal court, but I suggested a 5th amendment taking suit. That was unsuccessful.

I also quit taking Tarrant County cases because it’s no good being a “Dallas attorney.”

Marcus,

I agree with you. Captive bred deer are livestock.
They don't belong to the people of Texas.
