I'm writing a "problem solution" paper for my English Composition class. I wanted to write it about something to do with hunting. It needs to be a real life problem (related to hunting) and I have to come up with a solution that is not currently being used. I was wondering if any of you guys might be able to help. Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time.

I don't have enough money for a trophy elephant hunt (problem)...and patiently await your response (solution). Smiler

On a serious note, there are many ethics vs law issues you might discuss. For example, you see a wounded whitetail doe during a buck only season. Do you, in accordance with your personal ethics, put her out of her misery? Or do you, in accordance with, perhaps, the law in your area, leave her to suffer?

Good luck with your paper...

Badger Matt,

Well, that's not exactly what I meant. It needs to be more of a large scale problem. For instance, the deer are overpopulated in an area. Therefore, we need to go in and thin them out. However, this wouldn't work for me because that solution (thinning out the deer) is already being used in some areas. It's sort of hard to explain. Anyway, it needs to be something that I can write 6-10 pages on and have 10 sources (non-internet sources) for.

Aha!!! Now I see. Hmmmm, how about wolves in the West? Gotta keep the species viable but ranchers lose livestock. Your deer overpopulation issue would be a good one if you applied it to urban areas where typical solutions are not readily accepted. If you look to Alaska you could look at how to distribute limited tags (Tier system now...but some think change i necessary) or how to balance predator/prey ratios; residents generally want lots of meat/moose but some methods of contrlling predators are "touchy" a best (e.g., bounties, helo hunts, etc...).

Good luck.

How about poaching? Has to be a fair amount of information out there, particularly in Africa.

As I recall, there is also informaiton on the current solution - ridiculously low fines. That is IF they are caught.

You can use my solution and call it your own - put poachers on license for use as bait for carnivore hunts.

Seriously, it is a major problem which in part is a symptom of a larger economic issue where little money, if any, trickles down.

Wild game is the ultimate renewable resource. Unfortunately, unless it has some perceived economic value, people are going to consider animals to be vermin when the interests of man and wildlife compete in the same space. Some governments get it, others do not.

How about the declining hunting opportunites for young hunters just beginning to hunt. As a young hunter, will you have the opportunity to hunt a lion or an elephant in your life time? What about a polar bear? What about the kids growing up in big cities, who are not taught to hunt by their parents, or the ones who will pick up other hobbies because they were never exposed to hunting while growing up?

What about the increase in fenced in hunts for deer and elk that are paid by corporations thus making it to clostly for the average hunter.

Wildlife Artist,

I don't really see that as a problem. I hate to see the rise in prices, but it's not just fenced places. I have nothing against fenced places.

RBHunt,

I like your idea. I might have to think hard about that one.
