I am fascinated by this 'little stomper'.

I have seen some banter on the forum about modern loads for the cartridge..I think Ray Atkinson was writing about this?

I read it is possible to achieve 2150fps with a 400gr bullet (hence 'classic' .404 or .400/450 ballistics) and even up to 2300fps with 347/350gr bullets.

My question - is this 'easy'? By this I mean are these loads screaming hot or is this quite doable out of a 22" barrel within practical pressure ranges without pushing the handle?

If so, this seems like a great DG/bush cartridge for a std length M98 without the old penetration probelms refered to by Taylor and Harry Manners.

Info much appreciated.
Cheers

I load 347 grain Woodleighs with 57 grains IMR4198 for nearly 2400fps. You can also try 64 grains H335 for about 2340fps, 59 grains IMR3031 for about 2250fps.

Fla3006,
Have you loaded any 400gr. bullets for you 10.75x68 and if you have, what speeds were you able to achieve? Will you be in Tulsa in April?

Thanks for that,

Out of interest has anyone here used it on buffalo or elephant?
Opinions?

It seems to be a viable choice if you can get a good supply of cases ('romantically' at least as opposed to realistically in the face of more common .400+ cartidges like the the .458WM/Lott, .416's etc or the .404).

Cheers

Thanks Alf,

Just as a 'side'...

Do you think any Somchem powders could do this?
Have you loaded for this in any of your Mausers?

I was thinking S341 or S355 might be the ticket?
S365 might be Ok but perhaps too slow...I should just check a burn rate comparison chart, hey?!!

Anyone used this cartridge to hunt with?

I am burning for info!!!

Thanks
Cheers

Necked down, blown out and improved (meaning shorter shoulders), that should have been and apparently was close to the orginal 30 03. The Mauser case of course being wider!

I load with S335 and 60gr = 2300 fps with the Woodleigh 347gr bullet.Ken Stewart made me 375gr bullets and with S335 get 2200 fps.
Took an eland bull side on , broke both shoulders with the Woodleigh bullet lodged under far shoulder skin @ 120 meters.

Do you think the 385 gr. Cup point solid from NorthFork at 2100-2200 f/s is possible in theis case without excessive pressure?

Alf,
I susbsequently read this from you in a another post while searching....makes complete sense.

I guess if you want .404 ballistics then a .404 is what you need! (or .400 H&H or Tembo..)
None the less impressive to see this smaller case able to produce original .404 ballistcs whithout too much hassle.
Juts seems like another superb metric....one to keep in mind for the future!

Cheers
