I need a little help. This past January, I shot an oryx on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. His horns were 39 1/4" & 38". His bases were 7" plus. My taxidermist said he green scored 90 3/8. I'll probably never enter him in SCI but, when I went to South Africa in 2002, my PH/outfitter kept talking about gold or silver medals based on SCI scoring. My question is what medal is this bull? thanks CB

I'm not sure, but I think it's the same scoring system they use in Namibia. Your green score would be 229.5 centimeters. Gold Medal starts at 208cm. Silver Medal is 198cm to 207.9cm. Congrats on your Gold Medal Gemsbok.

For introduced species in NA the scoring is different than Africa. Gemsbok in NA scoring min are as follows - Bronze 80, Silver 84 6/8 and Gold 90. How is that. SCI Africa 88,90 2/8,94 Respectively.

George, The medal class that you are talking about are relative to the Namibian Professional Hunters Associations definition of Gold, Silver and Bronze. They do not necessarily correspond to the SCI class system. Coincidentily, they may be the same for some animals, but I believe you may find a difference for some of the species. Any Gemsbuck, NA or Africa that is 38" is an exceptional trophy. Hey, who is that ugly guy on the left in your photo ... I think I know him!
