Howdy, I have read quite alot about dangerous game rifles. Books from Taylor, Boddington, Wieland etc.. I have also learned a great deal on the Accurate reloading forum. Probley more so than the books that I have purchased. All this does in my opinion is leave me booksmart.Since I have no hunting experiance in Africa.

When I think about a rifle for Africa, it must be reliable. It must be reliable enough to defend myself if need be. So this brings me to my questions. How reliable do you think the Remington Model 30S would be built on a 505 Gibbs. And Is there a Gunsmith out there that you would reccomend to build this gun?

Thanks

Max, dont know if it will fit but I can assure you a 500jefery and or a 505 gibbs will really knock the snot out of what you hit... Again, it has to be a vital hit also...
Will knock an ele down with a close hit to the brain..

A 505 Gibbs is going to be strictly a dangerous game gun, with a hell of a punch at both ends. I like the .458 Lott for the versatility of being able to load it down with lighter bullets for plains game. As you know, Weiland is a big fan of the .458 Lott.

As for the rifle, I would stick with something that is controlled feed and based on the Mauser design. Don't know much about the Remington 30S - does it meet these critera?

I could be wrong..(wouldn't be the first or last), but seems like I've read a lot of posts on feeding problems with the .505 Gibbs. You might check the Big Bore Forum.

505 Gibbs on a 30S will take lots of GS time and $$$$. 458 Lott will be a lot easier to fit in to a Rem 30S.

Here is my Rem. 30S, in 458 Lott.

It is my favorite rifle, of any bore size.

I want to thank everyone for their input. Its tuff trying to find a gunsmith that will perform the work. And do a damn good job of it. There are alot of gunsmiths that can do quality work on a mauser, but I guess finding a 'smith that can work on a Enfield style action who has lots of experiance is next to impossible.
HogKiller, thats a good look 'n rifle. Has it been reliable for you?

Thanks again

maxbear, yes it has been 100% reliable. It feeds NF FPs like a kid eating peanuts. It even feeds empty cases the same way.
