I am sitting here in the Amanzi Lodge. This is a hell of a nice place.

We arrived in Johannesburg on time . However , it was clearly a lot less time than it used to be to connect with SAA . This concerned me. I wondered about my bags. Seems that was a valid concern as none of my bags arrived . My early charter is cancelled.

This is my first trip since the new money declaration procedures. Quite honestly , it scared me. I took a fair amount of money for tips and things of that nature. It clearly attracted attention . Unwanted attention. I was concerned about being robbed as we left. They took me to a dark room and wanted to count the money.

The next time, I am going to do it differently. I am only going to declare what I might bring out.

I hope my bags arrive tomorrow .

Nice moose brother!

Guys,

None of my clients are going to Zim with more than pocket money. It's just not worth the stress that Larry experienced. Tips can be handled post safari on their final invoice.

I flew in several years ago with 10K all over me. Gibbo said I was "a naughty boy". I don't think I declared it all.

If the bags don't show, focus on decent shoes and some kind of jacket for the morning ride out, but you know that.

'Hope you have a great hunt and safe travels home.

Good luck larry. This currency thing for me is another mark against hunting in Zim.

I took $9500 once and left with nearly the same amount as I had prepaid too much and I was owed money back.

I don't want a sign on my back saying I am carrying us dollars .

I have never got my bags or guns on time going to zim transferring via jnb. Another reason to fly emirates.

One other interesting thing. Delta has wifi available pretty much all the way across if not all the way across for about $16. Helps pass the time.

I agree about the currency.

I have been here a bunch of times. This is the only time I can recall having nothing . I can recall a couple of times where I was missing a single bag but nothing like this.

Best thing is wifi on long haul. An ipad and wifi is perfect emails, work, fb and ar.

Good luck to you brother! Those tusks coming to you from Bots makes me green with envy. They will look great at home!
Hey, you have enough time - print yourself up a few 'bond notes'. I would take your word for them before uncle Bob.....

The first country I have ever been to that asked how much money I have was the United States.

Second was Egypt!

Those pics are old. I got those in 2013 from the taxidermist. Someone is going through my old pictures.

You have to declare over $27k in uae and over $10K in us.

I think the issue in Zim is not declaration but the govt officials basically holding you hostage and/or shaking you down when you are leaving .

No one asked how much we were taking out of Zimbabwe last week.
No one has bothered collecting the "departure tax" the past few trips, either.

I realize it is not Harare, but when we entered Zim at the Zambia/Zim border recently, I was amazed that they did not even check our weapons or ammunition. They just asked for the weapon form and completed the bottom part and sent us along. When we left Vic Falls we were never questioned about the money we were leaving with although I do think we filled in a form that requested that information as part of the form. Again, not Harare, but I found the entry and exit this year to be more benign than in the past and in the past it has been pretty darn benign.

. . . hope the luggage shows today Larry.

Larry: Are you hunting at Humani? We passed Buzz there last Friday on his way down from Harare, we were at Mokore.
I had a considerable amount of cash with me as well, declared most of it on entry and was not asked how much I had upon leaving. I did note the cash I observed in the hands of Zimbabweans was old and ragged, you could barely tell the denominations on most bills.
Good luck and say hello to Buzz for us.

I was on the same trip as Karl - we got back to the US on 9/11. The only person that asked for a tip in Harare was the porter that brought the rifle cases to the police counter. My wife and I each declared the ~$2500 we had and no one ever asked about it. No requests for tips or harassment from any police. Just agonizingly slow processing of passports and checking the guns and ammo. Went through about 15 roadblocks on the round trip from Harare to Mokore and back and never got stopped - they seemed to be concentrating on the buses. No one asked about money when we left the country. They just check the rifle serial number and asked how many rounds were left.

I will put a hunt report up as soon as I can sort the photos. I had a great hunt at Mokore. The camp is well run. I was hunting with Clive Hallamore but met Barrie, Bertie and Neil Duckworth. They are all great people as is the camp manager Donovan. We saw all 5 of the Big 5. I shot buffalo, kudu, impala and bushpig. Could have easily taken eland, bushbuck, giraffe, wildebeest, warthog and waterbuck if I had the money.
