This came as a huge shock to me when another PH from Zambia sent me a message that Jason got gored by a Buffalo.
This is the third incident in just over a month.
1. Myself
2. PH Jimmy van Zyl ( Jimmy didn't get hurt though, only some scratches and a bruised leg)
3. Jason Stone

For some reason it seems like the Buffalo in Africa are on a charging spree.

Good luck with the healing, prayers sent.

Kind Regards

This is not the first time these things have come in groups. I hope it is the last.

. . . and it is loaded with a round in the chamber on safe. Always.

Had a discussion with someone sometime back.

He insisted that a well known professional hunter insists that his clients carry rifles with no round chambered, and only chamber a round when ready to shoot.

I told him about 40 years ago on my first safari, my PH insisted that I chamber a round, and put the safety on as soon as I am out of the truck.

I have been doing that ever since.

What is the point of carrying a rifle in the bush when it is not ready.

My safety comes off as I get on the sticks.

Agree 100%.

That is how I have always done it.

Might as well carry a stick as carry an unloaded rifle.

Be fair now, it is more like a bat, albeit more unwieldy...

Glad he is okay, with a hit to the head it could have been lights out forever. And wherever your rifle may be, there may be a time you can't get it on target.

Easy for you to say, Charles. You can probably hit the curve ball! Cool

With bats, as with rifles, I prefer targets that are not moving when I take aim... Roll Eyes

I have limited experience so I am not trying to be a "Know it all".
On a buffalo hunt I never use a sling with my rifle and I always carry it loaded.

Hope he has a full and fast recover.

I agree fully! I have always load one in the chamber when I get out of the hunting vehicle, and put it on safe, but also watch where my rifle is pointing at all times. Like others have stated, I carry my own rifle always. One thing I do however, is remove the cartridge from the chamber when negotiating steep slopes with a bolt rifle or when jumping a stream, and re-chamber when back on safe footing. In the case of my double rifles, I remove the cartridges when negotiating that type of terrain as well.

You cant fix the damage you may do if your rifle takes another's life.
