everyone going to africa has dreams of shooting the big buffalo, the black maned lion, 8'leopards etc. kudu sable waterbuck and many other plains game animals adorne the game rooms of hunters, but don't forget the others hyenas provide an exciting hunt by themselves,or how about a honey badger, or a porcurine. Take off for a 3 or 4 hour night hunt once. things like genet or civets are seldom seen at night. the bushpig might not be as famous as a warthog but is a much more uncommon trophy. night is the time to at least see a brown hyena, aardvark or how about a blindsnake there is no doubt that the glamour game take precident but don't forget the others they are as much africa as the big guys

Yes, lots of neat and interesting stuff to decorate a trophy room. I still want a full-body mount of a Bushpig.

I have always wanted to hunt and kill a big hyena. I would have my taxidermist make a full body mount, to go with my lion and warthog.

But I have never been successful hunting them. I have seen hyenas, but when I have seen them, I have always been hunting lions or something else, so never shot one.

When I have been hunting hyenas, they’ve come to the bait, and I have heard them, even as they crunched bones close at hand, but I have never seen them and never had a shot.

A bush pig rug would be cool.

We had a the rug made from my grandson's first feral pig. The taxidermist had done many black bears, but this was her first pig rug.

I will check pix and see if I can add to this post.

15 safaris, big five, spiral nine, etc, etc, etc but no hyena for me. I’ve tried and tried, but the stinky, smelly dog has my number.

And, three leopards brought to bag before I got a crack at a civet.

Funny how it works out.

I spent a morning shooting Francolins with the camp 22LR. We gave them to the Blacks in camp. Their smiles was a very memorable trophy.

OF all the pigs, that kid got a mighty colorful one.
Great for him, glad it was "rugged", looks like it came out real nice. Hope the workmanship was as good as it looks.

I just today put some black apoxy on my two Fla hogs where the lousy tanning job had shrunk and cracked around the eyes, ears, and mouth. even a couple places down on the chest area where it wraps around the mounting board was cracked.

Kid looks happy, something to give him a good start on his game collection wall.

Never seen, much less shot a genet, civet, or serval.

Saw a nice ant bear, but we had to pull out the licenses to see if we could shoot, back in camp. Never saw him again.

Turned down a huge Duiker my first hunt and have never seen his equal again...

But hyena seem to be attracted to me.... I think I've shot 8-9 of them...

I've shot quite a few hyenas now , and have them as a skin flat rug , rug skull mount and a full mount as well.
They are fantastic hunting!!
They also make an excellent trophy mount.
I've shot a couple of spotted hyena in Namibia that were edging
200lbs!!
A very underrated species.

Yes hyenas can make a safari extra special.
I remember getting up early in the dark to hunt them from a blind. We found ourselves in a herd of buff and thought they were elephant.Just like prized game the quality of the animal you take is very important.I've seen some nice hyenas taken in the past. Not much today.A simple tanned hyena hide laid out someplace is inexpensive and surprisingly pretty.I have one.I think it is as good or even better than a rug.A full mount of a large dagga boy like hyena is really nice.I've seen one done by an AR member and his was in no doubt worth every penny.I would like to hunt another on my upcoming hunt this fall. That and a nice large, dagga boy like baboon.

Yes, he does like to hunt and shoot. He has taken several feral hogs, deer, exotics, and wild turkey and we go on his first pheasant hunt soon ( he has already caught up with me on breaking clays and is catching up to his uncle).
There is a great pic of his first two hogs with his uncle with his first boar and if I can find it, will add to this post.
He graduates from high school this year and asked for a mule deer hunt for graduation gift. So, I am already looking for a fun place to take him where there is a good chance of success

I never thought about shooting a Hyena till I was in HARRY's gun store in Bedford Texas, where there was a shoulder mount of a hyena on the wall behind the counter. It made a very nice mount, and I had chances to shoot one, but had always turned it down. Wish, now, that I had taken one.

I love all those oddities and night critters. I've shot two hyenas, two African wildcats, caracal, porcupine, two bushpig, jackal and a long tailed mongoose. Genet, civet (I did miss one) serval (saw two) and honey badger (saw one) have alluded me.

5 safaris, 3 of the big 5, and about 30 species in total, and I too want a hyena so bad I can't stand it. They have kicked my but at every opportunity. Honey badgers, on the other hand, I have no desire to take and have passed up a dozen of them as close as 10 yards.!!!!

I’ve hunted Spotted Hyenas on all four of my Namibian safaris with Jan du Plessis of Sebra Hunting Safaris. I’ve heard hyenas calling around us, as well as breeding leopards, but the closest I’ve come to bagging one is the time a big Spotted Hyena was about to attack Jan and he shot it in self defense at SIX YARDS! We hunted them by starlight/ moonlight, but i would always nod off about 1:00 AM and snore like a chainsaw.

I hunted and took a beautiful hyena in Namibia on my last trip. We called them with a fox pro and stalked after I couldn't find him in the scope. That stalk in the dark-it was about 1am--was one of the most exciting things I've ever done. I look forward to doing it again.

Hopefully buffalo is next, but I'd love to do a spot and stalk on a nice Nayla

You must be very unluckily!

I think we shoot all the hyenas on our quota every year!

When we hunted Zimbabwe, I shot whatever was left on quota people did want to shoot or those unlucky to see them.

I remember years ago shooting quite a number of them, sometimes several at a time!

More often than not it is the outfitters skinner who has not scraped away all the underlying fat from the skin that results in hair slip on this particular specie.

in most cases the further most the more people walk the more trophy standards tend to relax a bit.
