in preparation for my self guided Cameroon hunt next March, i went to the county health dept. today for some shots. got a yellow fever, Hep A( first of 2 shots, second to come a week before the trip) and polio( booster). i will get the oral typhoid vaccination from Costco pharmacy in the next week or so( luckily i can write my own prescription for those pills). i was amazed at how knowledgable the guy was who lined everything up( he had all the available CDC info readily available on his computer but basically all he did was verify his recommendations). in fact, he told me that they could get the typhoid pills but it would entail another trip there, they would have to charge me $110 and the same pills from Costco would be about $60. they required cash/credit card payment but gave me a receipt and suggested i bill Medicare/supplement for the cost( about $285). now if i can get Uncle Sam and United Health Care to foot the bill, i will be a REALLY happy chappy! regardless, it was a painless process( except for the 3 shots!!!)

Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

When the young lass is batting her eyelashes at you, keep your eyes glued to your book and have Daniel order for you.
Wink

I am a rough an tumble guy when it comes to third world travel but I think I might plan to do Mountain House on the train. Seriously.

+1

And truly, Daniel is an amazing guy who can make anything run smoothly. Before you leave Yaounde you will be able to pick up a bunch of decent food in the local supermarkets. It must be the French influence, but Cameroon has an amazing array of food(for Africa).

Make sure to buy some of the "Biscotti". They are like a loaf of french bread that has be sliced and dried. Sounds odd but they make for a great cracker and are great with the locally available Laughing Cow cheese or sardines.

I will never forget stopping to make camp in the middle of nowhere in the armpit of Africa after a 7 mile trek through chest high grass. We paused to eat lunch. I spread some cheese on a "biscotti" an took a bite. The cracker soaked-up all the moisture in my already parched mouth. When I reached for my water bottle something caught my eye. There, just 70 yards across the river were three heavily laden poachers.

What followed will live with me for the rest of my days.

You can only have one "first safari" but a self guided safari comes real close. Seriously.

jdollar, we should chat by phone this week. Maybe you can PM me your number.

Also, Richard Powell(scruffy here on AR) wrote a book about his experiences in Cameroon on one of Cam's hunts. Please remind me, I would like to get a copy of the book to Daniel. I know that he will enjoy seeing all the photos of himself that Richard included in the book.

BTW, Richard Powell(scruffy) is a great resource. He is a heck of a nice guy and generous with his advise. A true measure of the man was Daniel's heartfelt reaction when I asked him about hunting with Richard: "Re-shard, Re-shard, Oh yes! He is a good man, a very good man!

As to the hunt. Oh you are in for an adventure. I look toward you with envy.

I'm guessing you will stay in Cam's apartment in Yaounde. Make sure to take some time to stand on the porch and look out at the city and watch traffic, the people and the birds.

You are in for the trip of your life.
