After hunting elephant for the first time with Myles McCallum/Buzz Charlton safaris in Zimbabwe I have aquired a strange illness.

I am thinking of buying a double rifle!

Can any of you double rifle shooters let me know what your 470 or 500 nitro weigh?

Also, your favorite reloads; powder and bullet.

Many thanks.

I have a Chapuis 470NE that has served me well. the weight is 10.6lbs. But when your hunting the big boys you'll hardly notice the weight.Plus the lbs adds stability to your shot.

My Merkel 470NE weighs at about 10 lbs, 10.25 or so...unloaded.

Favorite load...just about any 500grain bullet for the 470, Norma Brass, Federal 215 Match Grade Primer, and 110grains of H-4831sc...but a starting load would be 108grains of H-4831sc.

There is now a Double Rifle forum on AR just below the Big Bore forum...take a look, good information and many guys who know much about DRs

Not a .470 but ballistically similar and superior, my .450 No2 weighs a hefty 12 3/4 lbs.

My 470 Merkel weighs 10.7 lbs, my WR 500/450 weighs 10 lbs, my 9.3X74R Merkel weighs 8.3 lbs, My Grand Europian 9.3X74R wieghs 8.0 lbs with scope mounted, My Ped 458 RCBS weighs 9.3 lbs, my 58 cal Percussion double weighs 9.5 lbs, my 8x57JR weighs 7.9 lbs. My 577NE weighed 13.2 lbs, my 450/400NE 3" A&N weighed 9.3 lbs, my 375 H&H flanged mag A&N weighed 9.o lbs Those are the only ones I have records left for that indicate weight. Hope any of this helps.

IMO, a 470NE or 500NE shouldn't weigh over 11, to 11.5 lbs if you intend carrying it all day in the heat. You carry the rifle a lot more than you shoot it! The reason I got rid of my 577NE double was it was just too damn heavy to carry all day, at 13.2 lbs which is light for a 577NE double. Most 577NE doubles will run 14 to 14.5 lbs, some even heavier! beer

My Merkel .470 NE weighs same as Mac's, 10.7 lbs. They advertised a weight of 10.6 lbs in past. That is about perfect in my book.

I have a William Douglass 470 that weighs 9lbs - 10 ozs. I think it the perfect weight for manageable recoil as well as carrying all day elephant hunting. You will find you carry a double a lot more as you do not normally jump out of the cruiser and make a short stalk. Usually on ele or buff. you are walking a while.
