I've been toying with a new, larger monitor but told myself that I couldn't justify it. Now, with all that reading material, it is off shopping after work tomorrow.

Nick thanks once again for all the things you come up with. The timing on this could not be better for me. I just had the pleasure of spending 3 days in the company of Geoff Broom, one of the remaining old school Ph's. A gentleman of true graciousness and charm. His stories can not only entertain for hours but are extremely informative as well.

I didn't realize he considered himself such a tree-hugger. I guess the rapport turned to crap when that cow elephant killed him.

I've read about it a couple places, but I don't think it is in Death...Grass. I'll try to find it.

I will look also, I am sure Capstick mentions him and I think it was in DLG. If memory serves Uys led a grop of non-hunters up to a cow ele who then "ground out his life in a long bloody furrow". Capstick could turn a phrase.

The reference I saw was in Ron Thomson's "Mahoboh," which I bought and read on Will's recommendation and really enjoyed.

Thomson tells the whole story. According to his account, Uys had no one to blame for his death but himself.

He was apparently trying to pull off a stupid stunt in front of some tourists--by walking up to some elephants in "fearless mode"--when a cow took exception and killed him.

There ia short paragraph in Geo. Hoffman's book, but a longer discription somewhere that goes to the effect that Uys usually provided the entertainment to the tourists at Wankie.

Apparently the usual scenario was to bluff any passing cow elephant herds. Though his rifle was handy, it was always slung over his shoulder.

One time when the cows were bluff charging, Uys was doing his stuff and staring down the cows. The problem ocurred when he was back peddling and tripped in a hole, falling down. Well, that was enough for the cow to have at him, supposedly bending down and using her head to flatten him into a pancake, while the tourists believed this was some sort of performance. If it was, it was his last one.

That brings up a whole other subject of backing away from dangerous animals, but we'll leave that for another day.

You're correct. The whole account is in Mahohboh. My rendition is not totally accurate but close!

Odd thing, being remembered solely for how you died ... suppose that's better than not being remembered at all. Thanks!
