Ladies and Gentlemen,

I was reading a hunting report on Don Causey's website. The hunter was reporting on his hunt in the K3 Block in the Selous. The hunt was with a South African PH who had subleased the concession.

He said, "There were areas of the block that no one had been to in 5 years."

Now K3 is one of the smaller blocks in the Selous. I find it difficult to believe that no one had been to portions of K3 in 5 years.

He also said, "We were 80 miles from the nearest village." I don't think that is correct.

Reminds me of my second safari to RSA. We arrived in camp on the day another hunter shot a lion. I asked the PH about this, as I didn't think there were any dangerous game on that concession. He assured me that the lion was not "introduced". I ask him if there was a breeding population of lions on the concession and he assured me there was. Guess what, spent 14 days there and never saw a lion or any lion tracks.

Regards,

Terry

Well, I think I have to believe everything the PH says. If I didn't, it would mean I am a terrible shot, extremely unfit, and a stingy tipper. Frowner

Think back to your very first safari. Remember the excitement and thrill of fulfilling a dream?

Now think about this. Would you really have wanted your PH to be the one to tell you there is no Santa Claus?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

There is a Santa Claus, I know because I saw him last December!

And yes, I believe my PH, if I didn't I'd tell him he was full of it! (Then I'd laugh) My problem is I've had the same PH on 6 safaris, so I know him, and how he trys to bust on me..

My theory is: If you cannot believe your Safari Company/PH, outfitter/guide, then you need to get new ones.

On my first Safari I hunted with HHK. They were very up front with what I could expect in the area [OMAY] that I was hunting in.
I found HHK to be truthful in every way.

My hunt in March 2006 is with Brooklands Safaris, PH Dale Des Fountain. If I did not trust them 100% I would not have booked with them.

You think PH's are bad, I am a fly fishing guide, and I know you've heard about fishing stories.

Words that will come out of my mouth.

Thats the biggest fish a client has taken all summer.

It was a small one that broke your line.

Don't worry about the missed hook set. He was only 12 inches, water magnifies their image.

Splashing the water with your fly line doesn't scare fish too much.

Great Cast...

Your getting better already.

clap

I actually have repeat clients. Many think I have am great. Or was that the river was great. It was one of those things. rotflmo

PH's are only human.

Believing everything they say would be naive, although we would like to believe they are always 100% honost and infallible.

I trusted the first PH I ever had. During the safari he told me all about his dodgy past and shady doings.

Then every night when I wanted to write some notes on the days events, I couldn't as he was paranoid I was writing what he had told me during the day. Never made it past the first fews paragraphs before I had to give it up permanently!

You can usually tell which PHs are BS artists unless they are very good at it.

I'm not sure why we would hold PH's to a different standard than anyone else. Some people liked to be stroked and love the illusions a PH can cultivate. Others hate anything that smacks of exageration, unverifiable or falsehood. A good PH can figure out which of the two you are and make you happy. Since this seems to be more of philosophy question than anything else, do you believe everything your priest/pastor says? Do you believe everything your wife says?

an honest PH or guide anywhere in the world tells it like it is. A PH or guide anywhere in the world working towards getting good tips will tell the client what the client wants to hear. A client will hear what they wish to hear.

Gentlemen,

May be I have been lucky enough to hunt with PHs who are honest enought to tell me the truth.

I cannot recall anything anyone of them have told me that I later found out to be not true.

My experience was the same as yours with HHK and Graham Hingeston. I have a finely tuned "BS Detector" and I did not sense any BS from them. When I was planning, I talked to everyone that I thought I could trust. I weeded out anyone that spoke one word of BS. My "BS detector" narrowed the playing field considerably. There are many, many outstanding PH's and agents out there. I only found a couple that I would never book with.

Trust your common sense and instincts.

I have hunted with at least one PH that if he told me the sun wasn't going to rise until noon tomorrow, I would pack spare batteries for my flashlight before leaving camp.

I have hunted with another PH that if he said the sun would rise at the normal time tomorrow, I WOULD FEEL COMPELLED TO PACK SPARE BATTERIES FOR MY FLASHLIGHT BEFORE LEAVING CAMP IF I DIDN'T WANT TO BE IN THE DARK ALL DAY Wink Big Grin.

Most PH's are somewhere in between these extremes, but then aren't most of us as well Wink.

I have also hunted with HHK the last 4 years and will be back with them again next month. So far I have not found anything the three different PHs or Graham has said that wasn't true. Well except for Graham shooting the last bushbuck on quota that year but he didn't lie about it. (Funny story if I could tell it)

I guess having a few sundowners and sitting around the fire at night in the bush does play into this question,as thats entertainment.

There was this one PH who was so young that he had not had a chance to develop his bullshitting skills. He stuck to the facts. He gave us the scientific name and general information on every animal, bird, and plant that we encountered. It was impressive but got boring after a while. The hunt was like attending science lectures.

I would rather hunt with a PH who has some good stories. It does not matter if they are true or not as long as they are entertaining.

On my safari there was a sensory safari also incorporated into the property. All the time we had to cover our guns and would laugh at the igonrance of the treehouggers to not even know that our camp existed. Made me wonder what kind of fibshe told us bewildered
