I am thinking about booking a safari for Leopard, Buffalo and Sitatunga in the Lake Burigi West concession. I know about the problems with the Rwanda refugees in the past. Does anybody have current experiences with this area and what do You think about hunting there in January? I am grateful for every piece of advice, because this will be my first safari in Tanzania.

definetely better areas than Burigi for that IMHO. Is this a full bag (21 day species) safari? Anywhere in January is going to be touch and go with rain and getting stuck! The West tends to get more than average rain so my suggestion is to talk to some references who have been there at that time of year. "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. Hunter describing the early explorers and settlers of East Africa hunting is not about the killing but about the chase of the hunt.... Ortega Y Gasset

January is the best month for me to travel, because of my business. I have hunted several times in cameroon and Benin in the past. January is a good time to hunt there. Now I would like to hunt Leopard and Cape Buffalo on a 14 day Safari. Because of the new hunting seasons (- march 31)i thought it is a good idea to try it in Tanzania. If my informations are right, the Selous is difficult or impossible in January. The north should be better. The Massai region safaris are more expensive than the north-west. That is why I am thinking about Burigi. Am I right??? (sorry for my english)

@ fairgame: When I am right the best months in Zambia are July - November. That is impossible for me, unfortunately.

Thanks for Your advices. I am not set on Burigi or Tanzania. It is just my first idea. But which country or area is better to hunt leopard in January, if you are afraid of hunting CAR? Zimbabwe could be legal, but difficult at this time of the year. I have hunted in Doma in December for elephant and there were two cat-hunters in our group. They had big problems to get the cats to the baits. Thanks for every piece of advice.

Hann1, For the price you would be charged for a leopard hunt in Burigi, I think you could find a maasailand outfitter. No sitatunga here of course. Luke Samaras comes to mind but then you have to book by 31st March 2013 as I think he won't have his maasailand block after that?? Fujotupu here on AR can assist you. Adam Clements Safari Trackers is another if they still continue to operate in Lokisale? Both Adam and Mark Young are members here on AR. The West of Tz is comparable to the Selous when its wet though Burigi does have some hilly country so drainage could make it slightly more accessible?? You would have to ask reliable sources..... Also, contact Peter Dafner (German PH) as he would be able to set you up with different options. http://www.pdsafaris.com/index.php/your-ph.html If you choose Maasailand, then i would suggest later in January (2nd half onwards).
