yukon deltaI'm sure the handler could control that mutt.

I bet the guys in the truck are trying to roll up the windows...the guy walking in front of the truck is moments from diving over the wall..etc. etc.

jcarrIt amazes me how big of a dog they are, seeing them on TV against the backdrop of lions and other big game does not do them justice.

Let's see - Bill may be the hyena as he will "eat anything that walks, crawls or slithers". Or it could be Hillary as she is more man than woman (I have heard the hyenas can be male or female or both). The leash master is likely Bill as he has a tendancy toward kinkyness.
I guess is could be either or both. What a pair!!!

RREESEThey are not, of course, dogs. But, they do get big. They are second largest carnivore in Africa - second to the lion.
A few years back, I shot a huge hyena in what was then the Northern Province of RSA. We had a scale in camp. It weighed 198.6 lbs!
They have always held my fascination. I think they are an underrated game species.

MacD37Once the taxidermist uses enough soap and water on the hide, thay make a beautiful full body mount!
They are dangerous animals, an MP friend of mine, in Etheopia, had a pup he picked up, hanging with a road killed female's body, while on patrol! By the time it was six month old it bit the tire on a military jeep, and flattened it with a whooseh! My friend decided he didn't need a pet Hyena!
The big boy in the picture looks to be muzzled! I wounder why!

yellowstoneJust out of curiosity, has anyone noticed the logging chain ankle bracelot on the "owner"? There's got to be a story there somewhere that is missing.
Could be CSI Nigeria.

dogcatHaving spent a little time Nigeria, nothing would suprise me there, however, this picture is a bit more weird than "normal" weirdness there.

I wonder which would be more ferocious?
Hyena or Pit-bull?

I would still bet on the hyena. One on one...two on two, whatever. Ever seen video of 3 or 4 hyenas run a lion off of his kill? Spooky.

buckeyeshooterMan, I'd love to take that heyena on a stroll through detroit or oakland ---- I bet the pitbull boys would run and hide!
27 February 2008, 07:22
D99Not sure what I would want less, baboon or hyaena.
Nope they aren't a dog, you have to go back a few animals to get to a common ancestor. Prior to cats, weasels, dogs, and bears.
At 1400 foot pounds of bite pressure they could really screw you up.
I wouldn't want one as a pet, though a few mounted ones in the house would be nice.
Baboon would be just as bad if not worse to have as a pet, and even more crazy.

JefffiveI don't think a pit bull would survive the first solid bite, but it's not really a fair fight.

D99The trifecta of carnivora
Cat like carvnivores
Cats
Mongooses
Hyaenas
Civets and Mongooses
Dog like carnivores
Dogs (including Foxes, Wolves, and Jackal/Coyote types)
Weasels (from the stoat to the wolverine)
Bears
Racoons (Our 3 North American types and 4 South American types)
Skunks (worldwide distributions)
Weasels
Oceanic carnivores
Walrus
Seals
Sea lions
So a step or two before that in the evolutionary history before we got to a common dog hyaena ancestor.

jdollarpit bulls are really not that big of an animal. a 100 lb pit bull, accustomed to eating out of a food bowl vs. a 160-170 lb hyena accustomed to killing and eating it's prey. what do you think would happen? i watched 2 hyenas chase a young male lion off an impala he had just killed in Kruger Nat. Park. granted the lion was young but he was still almost fully developed and it was still no contest. caught the whole thing on video on a night game drive.

Just goes to show that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover!
The pictures of the guys standing alone with their hyenas really put the size of the animal in perspective…
I find hyenas interesting and think that they’d make a neat and unusual trophy…
A European mount of a Hyena skull would be cool…displaying some of the most powerful jaws on the planet!
