Diana Rupp has really done a fine job of turning around this publication, particularly for the African hunter and dangerous game hunter. Well done. Mike

Yes, it was a Field & Stream-type magazine for a while. Now it's one of my favorite hunting publications, one one of the few I still renew.

Absolutly! Additionally, her Chapter 1 What I've Learned After Three Safaris in Safari Guide II is very helpful and well written. She is a PA girl who never has forgot her roots. HBH

Mike, You are absolutely correct...it was a good editorial. Looks like Ms. Rupp has done her homework on the subject! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Agreed; the magazine is great. When I buy a magazine, my hope is always that there is at least one article that is interesting or educational. Oftentimes I feel like my $5 was wasted though. But with Sports Afield there are always several things in every issue of interest. And they always have some good subscription incentives. I have never subscribed to a hunting magazine. Have just always bought one here and there or read ones that people gave me etc. Have read the last couple issues of Sports Afield and I like all the African hunting articles etc. "Science only goes so far then God takes over."

Gentlemen I agree with all the KUDOs given Ms. Rupp on her fine work with Sports Afield. It turned that rag into a real hunting magazine worth subscribing to! ………………………….PS …and she ain’t hard to look at either! My brother and I talked to two women at the Sports Afield booth at SCI Reno last year. I think one of them was Diana. We begged her to please keep the Africa stuff coming, and she has done exactly that. It is overall an excellent magazine, and the January issue is outstanding.

Couldn't agree more. I have most of the issues since Diana took over and if it seems too long since the most recent issue, grabbing one that is a few years old still makes for a great read. I guess that's consistency.

I agree, really turned it around.. My guess is their circulation and advertising revenue is doing well also.

Mike, I completely concur. I don't know all of the inside story on the business plan, but I find it ironic that it took Ms. Rupp to influence the revitalization of a hunting magazine that many of us used to love, but sadly watched descend along with the hunting magazine industry in stepping away for the type and quality of hunting stories that many of us desired to read. For the first time in many years, I anticipate the next month's arrival of this magazine as I used to do with others in my youth or early adulthood. And I hope she is influencing a new generation of hunters who long to live the dream that was described and suggested first by or at the direction of Ms. Rupp on these pages. What a great change in the business! And thanks for reminding us of one of the good things, Mike.

It is the only hunting magazine I subscribe to. I think Diana has truly turned it into a magazine worth reading for the hunter, either for the African hunter or the rest of the world hunter. I aspecially like reading a magazine that is not totally saturated on the love affair with the AR platform type of rifle. Hats off to Sports Afield.

Not of the whole magazine, but you can get Boddington, Doctari and a few others here: http://www.sportsafield.com/site/index.php That should tempt you into ordering a subscription.

Ms. Rupp has done a fantastic job with Sports Afield. It contains all that a true hunting magazine should: excellent writers, fantastic photos, and hunts conducted both home and far away. With their expansion into TV and Safari Press, they are in for the long haul. I sent several subscriptions out as xmas gifts to friends who were impressed. I enjoy seeing it arrive in my mailbox and spending some time in the leather chair downstairs surrounded by mounts from my adventures. Magazines and newspapers are dying out. The only ones I get now are the Rifleman and Am. Hunter that come with the life memberships to the NRA. Here the local newspaper building is for sale. There is no paperboy any more. I started out in the 1950's and read Outdoor Life and the Rifleman. Here on the net we can talk about our stuff and not just read what somebody else wants to get paid to write about. Here is a new to me rifle that I just got. I enjoy the occasional SA and buy a few. Basically it costs like a book, I have learned what I want from magazines by now, watched what I want by video and focus on actually hunting. Most of the action in the gun rags is AR platforms and other "black rifle" stuff, which don't appeal to me. Not a detraction there, any more than I am against bear or lion hunting just because I am besot with plains game. _______________________

I am in the same boat as Eddie, didn't even know it still existed. SA was one of the first magazines I subscribed to back in the 60's the boy did it go south. This is good news that I will have to check out. Thanks! As with surefire I dropped G&A and several others back when the only articles were about double stack 9's. I agree about the upgrade of SA and have been renewing my subscription at the SCI Convention every year. Missed the Convention this year and have now opted to let my subscription play out. My last issue contained the following make up of ad versus articles and have decided not for me anymore. Pages number 122, Full Page Ads equal 26, half page ads equal 9, but the real kicker for me is there are an additional 14 Full Page Real Estate Ads. Total of 49 pages of Ads. If I want to buy Real Estate I will get a Real Estate Publication, geez. Add to this the 4 pages by Shane Mahoney that I cut out immediately upon receipt and have only half the mag left. Maybe I am getting too old and cranky, but this is just how I see SA now. Heh if you like it, go for it, just not for me anymore. I have quit watching most every "hunting show" including TAA also, just the same da de da over and over it seems. I am cranky, huh? The knee is getting better, maybe that will change my perception?
