I have always practiced that anything expensive and you want to keep should go in your carry-on. I am going to Cameroon in a few weeks. I have extra camera lenses that I am taking. Should I ship them separately in a Pelican box or just put them in my suitcases and hope for the best?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Maybe a larger carry on? I use a Red Oxx PR 5 medium (I think), carry binos, cameras, change of clothes, Ipad, etc. and always have room left over. Fits overhead bin, too.

This! Although some airlines have started weighing carry on bags with a pretty low and strict limit. Not that I would do anything of the sort, but I've seen folks unload some of the heavier items, leave it under the terminal seat, get the bag weighed, then load it back up. Works even better if traveling with a companion that can keep an eye on the left behind items while getting weighed ... or so I've been told.

You are allowed a carry-on AND a personal item. That personal item might be a small camera bag.
Also if you wear a jacket onto the plane you can stash all kinds of stuff in the pockets.

Thank you gentlemen, my carry-on bag is currently the max size allowed. I carry a CPAP as well which I guess is my personal item.

I wear one of those tactical/photographic type vests with lots of pockets. Stuff as much stuff as I can in the vest to cut down on the carryon weight.

You allowed carry on and good backpack
Lately I’ve been traveling just with that and it’s awesome not to worry about checked bags

Singleshot, Your CPAP is considered as an essential medical device, and is exempt from baggage considerations. I carry a RedOxx Gator bag for my diabetic supplies, plus a RedOxx M.U.T.T. bag, and a small RedOxx duffle. A bottle of whiskey from the duty-free shop fits conveniently at the bottom of the Gator bag under the sharps container.

Tim, that is the answer to my problems. I did not know I can have a "Personal Bag" with max dimension 9" x 10" x 17". I think that will work fine,

Thank you,

Jim

I doubt many people carry as much photography equipment as I do.

I pack everything in my suit case.

Never had any get damaged.

But, I normally fly direct, not through several airports to my destination.

Unless I am on a specialized photo trip, I never bother carrying an SLR.

My current carry everywhere camera is a Sony RX10 Mark4.

Has a long zoom, takes excellent pictures, and videos.

Todd is right. Some airlines will weigh carry-ons. I've had Lufthansa, KLM and Emirates weigh carry-ons. Some of the non-US airlines have some pretty low weight limits for carry-ons. Lufthansa's limit is only 8kgs (17.6 pounds). Some rolling suitcases will weigh 12 pounds empty.

On my first trip to Africa, I took my son and Father. Lufthansa weighed all 3 of our small carry-on sized duffels. We were way over weight. We had a couple Filson Pullmans, that weigh 6 pounds empty. After a pair of Swarovski 10x50's binos, you get to 17 pounds pretty quickly. Lufthansa made us pay $200 to check an extra bag. That was a rookie mistake.

Now we use Red Oxx carry-on bags. Red Oxx bags are light weight and tough. I like the ruck sack and PR5 Duffel.

That is the end result when people take advantage of goodwill gestures and the airlines have cottoned on and are taking appropriate measures.

I have seen people carrying so much it was unbelievable!

I still think total weight of passenger and his belongings should be taken into consideration.

Good Lord!

After Ramadan you don't want to get caught in a cross-wind as you might get a free flight .... without baggage of course. rotflmo

Jokes aside, calculating the weight of the passenger seems rather harsh as I am pretty sure some average passenger weight formula has already been devised.

Commercial airlines also handle cargo over and above the souls on board and their luggage so maybe they should look at eliminating the cargo factor altogether and have more pax luggage space chargeable at lower-rates.

Went on a zip line in the Alps.

The man setting me up was laughing when I said “do I need extra weight so I don’t get blown by the wind”

I have seen passengers getting on the plane who were almost 4 times my size!

Bloody disgusting!

I always wear a jacket with capacious pockets. I put all the heavy stuff I can in those pockets. After checking in and clearing security I put it back in my carry on. Nobody will weigh your coat.

The part I cannot understand why do airlines just remove items from the carry on and put it in the suitcase?

The weight remains the same??

Its all about weight distribution and safety and you do not want overweight carry-ons exceeding the overhead bin carry limits by too much otherwise bad turbulence could see failure of the bins. When you see what some passengers struggle to get on board and into the overhead bins, it is obvious they are only thinking of their own self interest and cheapskate cost rather than the safety of the plane and fellow passengers. To make it worse it often seems the grossly over weights who take up one and half seat spaces who also travel heavy with carryon luggage.

I used to use a surplus backpack as carryon, but switched to a RedOx backpack. It's roomier and I use it as my backpack on the gari. Works well. Never had them weigh my carryon.
