Today, SCI is pleased to announce the introduction of the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2015 in the U.S. Senate by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). This important compendium of pro-hunting provisions has been passed by the House but blocked in the Senate for years. Now, with the election of several new pro-hunting Senators in 2014 and the resulting change in chamber leadership, the bill now has its best chance ever to be passed through both chambers of the Congress. SCI worked in conjunction with other pro-sportsmen’s groups such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the Boone and Crockett Club, and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) who worked tirelessly from the very first day of the 114th Congress on the introduction of this landmark piece of legislation. “SCI would like to thank Senator Murkowski for her leadership and support for America’s hunters and anglers,” said SCI President Craig Kauffman. “America’s hunters and anglers trust that the U.S. Senate will take action on this landmark piece of legislation quickly to preserve our hunting heritage for future generations of sportsmen.” “The Bipartisan Sportsman¹s Act is not only an access bill, but also a way to promote economic growth in our country. Sportsmen and women across the country spend billions of dollars each year on outdoor activities. In Alaska alone there are more than 125,000 individuals who engage in hunting each year. This economic activity not only helps local communities but aids conservation efforts as well,” Sen. Murkowski said. “This commonsense, bipartisan legislation supports conservation efforts while also improving access to recreational hunting and fishing on federal lands.” SCI is very appreciative of the work of Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and her Democratic colleague Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) in compiling the bill and serving as the principal original co-sponsors, please contact your two U.S. Senators and urge them to support the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2015!

We will, when they do any good. Great to see this bill going through, but I bet others, like the NRA had a lot to do with it.

No doubt a collaboration, but I do believe SCI the principal party. Our own Alaska chapter has worked with Senator Murkowski who introduced the bill. Saeed, Obviously you feel strongly about hunting, conservation, and the SCI. Please, get involved in the SCI and move the organization in the direction you feel more appropriate. Your work here at AR should give you a head start in influencing their policies and practices. But, like any political challenge, it will take time and patience to convince the various players. Also, the SCI will never be perfect and, because it is composed of a heterogeneous group of hunters, compromise will be necessary.

I am sure many decent people have tried in the past, and got nowhere, and they were much closer to SCI than me living many thousands of miles away. My feeling is the rot in the SCI management has taken very deep roots, and it will take a long time for us to see any serious changes. SCI is a sort of a banana republic. Non of its members has any say of what goes on.

Saeed, I cannot comment on the ethics of the national SCI, I don't have enough first-hand experience with their inner workings or governance. But, I do have greater experience with the local SCI branch, and the local chapter folks appear to be a decent enough group of people trying their best to promote hunting and conservation. I have assumed this carries on up into the national SCI. I have no reason to think otherwise. Possibly, others reading and posting on AR can provide insight into the ethics of the national SCI.
