I received this in an email from my Dad today. I will admit that I had to choke back pretty hard after seeing what this kid has done. I wish we had more like him. Here is the story: Subject: The Rock > > Pictured here is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Hwy 25 in rural Iowa. > For generations, kids have painted slogans, names, and obscenities on this rock, > changing it's character many times. A few months back, the rock received it's > latest paint job, and since then it has been left completely undisturbed. The flag is not draped over the rock, It's actually painted on the rock too. > > Also pictured is the artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen. > > Obviously, not all college kids are disconnected! > > "God Bless America" > William Berger True courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway. - John Wayne The courageous may not live forever, but the timid do not live at all.

It is about time that americas heroes are recognized. My grandfather has been a VSO for the last twenty years, recently retired, and was a decorated veteran from WW2. I literally cried during the superbowl presentation of americas gretest generation. This stament takes noting away from the sacrafice and hard work that the current branches of todays armed services provide. It is a travesty that todays armed forces are not given more accolades for their dedication to duty and the trials that they, and their families endure. The monument pictured, untagged and left in unmarred tribute show in a small way the respect earned and due to todays members of the armed forces. I am biased to the WW2 vets as I have met dozens of them and they regarded their duty as simply as taking out the garbage. IT HAD TO BE DONE AND IT WAS. These men determined that there duty as Amaericans was to defend OUR way of life and insured that to their dying breath that it would remain so. These men to me ar not glory hounds, publicity seekers, or braggarts. The stories that I was told as a young man remain with me to this day. I tell these stories to whomever will listen. History is dying every day with these quiet, limping old men. May our future warriors find the same resolve to serve as selflessly find the three truths in battle, first you are responsible for your brother next to you, secondly you are held accountable by the good Lord, and lastly, hold true to the truths that you swear to uphold. Every time I return home, another of these great warriors has passed. My heart grows heavy with the thought of their sacrifice, gone unrecognized for so many years, and hope that through a forum such as this that these great men will never be forgotten. Statues are monuments, but please explain to those that look at them what they represent. Thank you, Alan

I would say that there are one hell of a lot of "kids" like this out there, there is better than 100,000 of them in Iraq alone!most of them the same age that we all were when we answered the call. I wonder what the "old timers" thought of us back then? Mike "Too lazy to work and too nervous to steal"

There are many like this and I am grateful for each and every one. This a great post and it dose this old Marine's heart good to see it. I really don't know what the old guys thought of us in 67 but it changed in 68. I am proud of each one of these "kids" and I hope now that we're the old guys we show this pride and welcome them as our brothers in arms. Thanks to all. Thanks Hog Killer for passing it on. Excellent reminder of the sacrifice of many generations of Americans...we stand humbly grateful. It reminds all of us that freedom is not free. On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch... Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son! - Rudyard Kipling Life grows grim without senseless indulgence.
