Hey all,
Wanted to ask a favor of anyone who might be hunting hippo this year if they're willing to part with a hide bracelet. I've wanted one for a bit but pulled a card from the bottom of the deck health wise the last couple yrs and prob the next few yrs that'll slow me down from getting me one myself.

Are you just looking for a piece of tanned hide to make a bangle out of or are you talking about a piece of raw hide that is cut and then dries to fit your wrist? I can help you with the former, but not the latter.

Not to hijack, but how is hippo leather? Good for using to make complex pieces, or like elephant (thicker)?

Cheers
Orvar

No Hippo now, but tons of elephant hide...

Very nice, soft and extremely supple. I find it to generally be much more supple and soft than elephant. I think you could make most anything out of it. I have had watch bands and billfolds made out of it. For rigid items like a knife scabbard it would need to used over stiff leather.

Will used some of my leather to make a passport wallet, and I have had 3 pairs of boots made.

I have a hippo-hide sjambok that I picked up somewhere and it's totally stiff. Any suggestions on how to soften it up?

the folks in RSA beaten with sjamboks by SAPS a few years back might disagree with the soft and supple opinion dancing

As I am sure most understand, a sjambok is raw hide, twisted and dried. I was referring to split and tanned leather. Frankly, I will pass on being beaten by either.

The hippo hide bracelets that I have seen are made from raw hippo hide placed around a bottle and allowed to dry(harden). they will stink if wet.
