Elephants
Does anyone have the estimated figure of the number of Elephants in Africa now or the most recent estimate. In todays Pittsburgh Post -Gazette there is an article about the Pitsburgh Zoo purchasing a farm to statr a breeding facality. The article states a 1989 estimate of 600,000 Elephants. The facality was an Elk farm and a shooting gallery for Elk.

Nairobi, Kenya, 26 November 2003 (IUCN) -- Between 400,000 and 660,000 elephants are
currently thought to roam in African forests and savannas, according to a report by experts from the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG).

The latest elephant population survey (2002) shows aproximately 400,000 (definite), 60,000 (probable), 100,000 (possible) and 100,000 (speculative). [Page 19 - African Elephant Status Report 2002]. A new Status Report is to be published in 2006.
